Brilliant work by Matania. It's lovely to see him getting recognition after being out in the cold for quite a while. He was Frank Bellamy's favourite and they met in Matania's studio once and exchanged Christmas cards.
Thanks for sharing Matrix

Re: Power Comics
I still seem to remember something about an award that may or may not have been presented by the Guardian but the photo I was thinking of apparently came from The Observer (which many people think of as the 'Sunday Guardian' anyway). Here's Alf - a few years older and looking far more dapper in his...

Re: What comics did you buy today?
Did the Americans do strips like that with the text beneath the picture? Now that you've mentioned Jack Kamen it looks even more American to me - shades of Milton Cannif. Here's the only other two pages I have. Sadly the eight page strip section wasn't in the 1956 or 1957 issues so was probably sho...

Al, there are a lot of people who thank you for all your hard work over the years. I look forward to seeing what you do next old boy! As for 'Soul-net' no thanks, I for one don't want the burden of updating my blogs and website after death

Re: Is eBay getting worse
How are you searching? There are never that few items for sale in that category. I currently have almost 200 items for sale in UK Comics & Annuals myself, and have done for weeks! A quick check of that category across ebay UK currently reveals 88, 454 results! Tony, you're absolutely right! I was a...

Re: Is eBay getting worse
Interesting discussion. I have been a buyer since about 1999 (current profile says 2001) and sold a few bits and bobs over the years. I have only had a few parcels "go missing" and claimed the value (both as a buyer and seller), got the Post Office money and not felt it's a growing problem. It's cer...

Good try and thanks too but no biscuit this time See http://www.comics.org/series/1918/covers/jehanbosch wrote:You could try the covers of "Dark Shadows", the adaptation of the TV series. Although that was a Gold Key comic, not a DC comic.

Re: cover artist
Funnily enough the first thing that cover reminded me of wasn't actually a comic cover but the Dorothy McGuire film The Spiral Staircase. Although an image of scared girl dressed in nightie coming down spooky staircase holding a candle waiting for handsome man to save her must have been used umptee...

Re: cover artist NEW ONE NON-UK
Sorry this is a non-UK question but I suspect a lot of people here read DC comics in the Seventies and I've trawled Nick Cardy, Jeff Jones and Neal Adams covers for DC during that period and can't for the life of me think what this German cover reminds me of. Anyone any clue? http://standby4action.f...

Re: If you could bring back 1 UK Comic which 1 would it be?
Talking of Whizzer and Chips, may I ask a favour? A friend was telling me he had a letter published in the early run of Whizzer and Chips in which he wrote about the quantity of exclamation marks that appeared in a previous issue or story! <<< (had to do that!) His name is Michael Jack. I'd be grate...

Re: Doctor Who Influences
I wonder what Norman's opinion of this tiny, unsigned 1956 illustration from Lilliput no.229 is? Personally I'm in two minds, but there are enough similarities to Frank Bellamy's style (particularly the nearside boot and leg) to make me think that he could have drawn it. Beyond that I can't think o...

(Sorry for straying so far from your original topic btw Peace. These flights of fancy seem to take on a life of their own at times!) - Phil Rushton ...And to prove that, Phil do you have a date for this book - and is it published by Blackie? I have a copy of one - no date - with a Raymond Sheppard ...
