Has he been inspired by Basil Wolverton to some extent for his monsters?

It seems there has been a comic strip featuring the mascot for the 2010 SA World Cup:

I vaguely remember the TV cartoon for the 1982 World Cup and the CG series for the 2002 one but I don't know of any comics related to the World Cup as such.
