Re: Looking for Judy comics from the early 80s... or information

To add to Phil's post, Judy swallowed up Tracy in January 1985, Mandy and Judy , or M&J as it was better known, passed away on May 24th 1997 and Bunty breathed her last as a weekly with issue 2249 on February 17th 2001. In addition there were five 64pp issues of Bunty Monthly between March and July ...

Re: New Roy of the Rovers book

Oh, oh. The news could not be worse. My email went to Titan on May 7th asking for the publication date of Roy Of The Rovers - The Archives (1954-55) . I stated that I was keen to reestablish contact with Roy during his earliest days in The Tiger and requested an early reply to my email. This afterno...

Re: The Sparky File 1965 to January 1969.

As these matters are straying from the principal point of this thread, perhaps a new one about Valda or even about the content of Mandy could be started. OK, who took my new thread on a forum for Mandy , Judy and Bunty , and what have you done with it? At the very least I would have expected the co...

The MANDY, JUDY and BUNTY forum

Earlier today I put forward the suggestion that a thread could be started for those members who have observations they would like to make about Thomsons' girls' story paper Mandy . There is no real reason to limit it to Mandy , so why not include Judy and Bunty ? If you want to talk about characters...

Re: The Sparky File 1965 to January 1969.

I did actually read MANDY and JUDY in the late 60s/early 70s, after my older cousin had finished with them. BOBBY DAZZLER and VALDA are the two stips that haunt my memory to this day. The basic idea behind Bobby Dazzler , a solitary girl in a boys' school, was quite a good one. However, this long-r...

Re: The Sparky File 1965 to January 1969.

Flying animals transporting people also have some history. There was a long serial called The Winged Horseman in The Skipper 54 (Sep. 12 1931) - 78 (Feb. 27 1932). In this instance the wings and the mechanical flapping contraption were strapped on. A similar arrangement, without animals, allowed Zar...

Re: Pecking order at D.C Thompson.

I'm certain they weren't called 'The Big Five' around the Thomson offices as a means of establishing a heirarchy amongst the Thomson titles published pre-war. As we seem to be winding up this thread, I would just like to add a caveat to Kashgar's point. As far as The Big Five were concerned, I agre...

Re: The Sparky File 1965 to January 1969.

I'm well out of my league with some of this stuff! No you are not, ISPY. Without the scans that you have posted and Alan's ongoing file, I would not have been in a position to make any of the links that I have made recently, because all I know about Sparky I have basically learned from you two. For...

Re: The Sparky File 1965 to January 1969.

Without seeing more episodes of Lonely Wood in Sparky, I am not competent to comment on the extent to which it is a repeat of any of the three series in The Wizard text paper. However, the later series in The Wizard picture paper are repeats. All three series are presented back to back, but in the o...

Radio Fun series featuring Ben Lyons and his wife Bebe Daniels. Just to clarify. I have no knowledge of the series in Radio Fun , so I may be partially barking up the wrong tree here. However, the word Lyons was always a plural where the immensely popular radio show was concerned. The main characte...

According to information provided by Ray Moore in his authoritative book Topper Tales, Danger In The Hills was drawn by George Ramsbottom. The artist for both The Storms At Sea and The Stallions Of The Moon was H. R. Platt.

Re: The Sparky File 1965 to January 1969.

Just to add to Phoenix's post and one amendment. The Raven Talks was actually published in the Victor in 1962 as a text story not as a picture story Just to put the record straight, Col, as there seems to be some confusion here. The serial The Raven Talks was not repeated in The Victor , either as ...

Sorry, Kashgar, again!! I now realise that you were referring to the heading blocks in The Victor, not the ones in The Wizard. You carry on, I'm going back to bed.

Re: The Sparky File 1965 to January 1969.

From memory I'm certain that the first had heading blocks drawn by Calder Jamieson and the second by Jerry Butchart. Thank you for pointing out my error, Kashgar. I really shouldn't write these posts when I'm tired, it just leads to carelessness and the need to apologise. As far as the artists are ...
