Re: The "Posh" (and over-expensive) Beano
Wish I'd had the idea of keeping all the free gifts (though the sweets might go a bit off, but they're not likely to be worth much!). One day they just might be worth quite a lot, and if they're not, you can have a nice bonfire (only kidding!).

Re: How could the Dandy save itself?
Also, Billy the Cat in the current Beano is an adventure strip rather than a humour strip, as he was in his runs in 2003 and 2005. However, in the 70th birthday Beano, he was done as sort of a cross between Manga, adventure and humour drawn by Laura. Anyone know why the Dandy started losing readers ...

Re: Bob McGrath what else did he draw?
Digifiend, Sparky started in 1965. I assume Puss and Boots were introduced fairly earlier on (if not at the very start). So John Geering started in the 1960s. Mike Pearse did indeed start in the 1990s, so yes he should go there. Bill Ritchie and Gordon Bell both deserve a mention. I'm not sure about...

Re: Bob McGrath what else did he draw?
That's an interesting thought actually. When you think about it, artists can be split up into 'generations'. You could do the same for characters as well, though that would have to be for a particular comic, whereas this applies to all DC Thomson comics. These are my suggestions (like a sort of DCT ...

Re: How could the Dandy save itself?
It's down to personal taste really. If you don't like a comic, don't buy it. Yes, it's a shame that so many titles have disappeared over the years, but if no one will buy a comic there's no point in it being on sale. DC Thompson, IPC and all other publishers have to make money. If they didn't, there...

Re: Favourite/Least favourite Beano strips
Correct - a mistake on my part. I checked; London B412 appeared 13 times, the same as Dash-Along Dot. The strip first appeared in issue 3404 (October 2007) and last appeared in issue 3420 (February 2008). That wasn't a very long run, and they missed a few issues. Most of the strips were drawn...

Re: Young cartoonist looking for tips
Great cartoons, better than some pros! Agree with the tips about rough sketches - I have a few sketchpads with some ideas in, and often if I have a new idea for a comic strip, I draw some of the key images I want in the strip. As for artist style, I tend to refer to a particular artist. My first A3 ...

Re: The stories so far...
A question for you Big Jock: What was/is your favourite character to write for? (also what was/is your least favourite?) In the History of the Beano, Euan Kerr said he liked writing for the Bash St Kids more than Dennis, citing that an important factor about the characters was to make them the sort ...

Re: How could the Dandy save itself?
When they made the most recent Wallace and Gromit film (A Matter of Loaf and Death), Nick Park (Beano and Dandy fan, remember) explained the battles he and the rest of the Aardman Animations team had to fight with the massive American studio DreamWorks. He said they thought that W&G, who are set in ...

Re: Favourite/Least favourite Beano strips
I wonder what the shortest lived Beano strips of all time are? I will have to count how many issues London B412 appeared in, as I've never checked that. It was one of those strips that you didn't notice had gone until it was long gone. On the other hand, there are some strips that are always conspic...

David Sutherland's most notable strips over the years include: 'Danny on a Dolphin' in a Paddy Brennan type style - his first strip The Great Flood of London' (Brennan style, again) 'The Bash Street Kids' (Leo Baxendale style) 'Biffo the Bear' (Dudley Watkins style) 'Dennis the Menace' (Davey Law st...

Re: The stories so far...
I think Barry Glennard took over Gnasher and Gnipper about 1993. Certainly, in the 1993 annual, they were drawn by David Sutherland. Glennard ghosted Sutherland's style for a number of years, and it is very difficult to tell between them, unless you're 'in the know'. However, the style definitely ch...

Re: Beano Videos and DVDs
It's not hard to imagine a Dennis the Menace puppet show; after all, one of the best remembered free gifts was a Dennis the Menace glove puppet which featured in the story of the issue it came with (Dennis also had a 'special Walter the Softy puppet unsuitable for Beano readers').

Young cartoonist looking for tips
I sometimes draw (and occasionally finish!) cartoons in my spare time. I only really draw Beano characters (I've drawn a few Beezer characters, but never done any strips) because that's what I'm familiar with. I like to draw Billy Whizz especially, but I've produced a couple of Calamity James storie...

Re: Any Vic Neill fans...Mc Ticklers...Plug..
Has anyone else noticed how Billy Whizz underwent a seemingly constant evolution when Vic was drawing him? If you look at the earliest of Neill's strips, he has the original two hairs, his (then new) tracksuit still had the stripe down the trousers and looks somewhat unusual for a Neill character. H...
