Re: What comics to keep???

Finding room is not too much of a problem so far, as well as comics and annuals I've collected Victorian books and everyday books that I find interesting.Recently had a clear-out of newish books which are not of any value and also US comic books that are serialised as I prefer comics with complete s...

Re: Origins?

Some time back , wandering around a market, I came across an antique stall with two pieces of original Harold Hare colour artwork. This was the first time I had seen artwork of this kind. What struck me first ,was how big the work was compared to it's comic size.I asked the price and was told £22 and ...

Re: annuals

As a run of the mill collector with minimal knowledge on the subject, I'm delighted to pick up scraps of information here and there.I recently sat and watched this fellow on Youtube who had an annual in front of him.First he spoke at length about the cover ,pointing out that it had a year date on th...

Re: Origins?

One of my favourite comics of the 40/50s was the American Capt.Marvel to which was added the Marvel family of Capt marvel jr and Mary Marvel.Due to a long running copyright dispute with the creators of the Superman comic ,this comic ceased to be in the mid 50s.A later DC revival of Capt Marvel which...

Re: Concept art from my new superhero comic

All great art is based on talent and originality, artists that went their own way regardless of success.Examples such as Van Gogh, Lowry, Beryl Cook the list is endless. If you're tied in with a publisher and need to make a living it's tough, but if you are starting out and fear rejection or not, you...

Re: Collectors etiquette

In Victorian times people created scrap books of their favourite artwork or kept newspaper articles.Today with the internet combined with the printing machine I'm able to do a similar thing.Comic characters of the remembered past , paintings I like, and articles of interest can now be gathered into ...

Re: Origins?

From the comics you mention, I presume you're mainly asking about 1950s comics? If so, it was a different situation then and although comics sold far better, the creators received very little recognition (or even credits). Yes I was probably refering to the era of Roy Wilson and Dudley Watkins. The ...

Re: Origins?

As a child I had two or three comics delivered from the newsagent each week. These ,and other comics I bought all had some great characters in.When I was older I got to know the names of some of the artists involved and understood the amount of work that went into producing these comic strips. There i...

Re: Origins?

A simplistic view of the difference between british and american comics leading up to the 60s I think would be this.British comics had funny characters and adventure strips where children were the heroes, whereas american comics had adults as heroes in an adult world. In the 50s America brought in th...

Re: Collectors etiquette

When on holiday ,as a collector I seem to be drawn to junk shops and second hand shops.Recently spent a couple of hours in Norwich and found a place with loads of comics and annuals where I could have happily spent a week.I think when I enter some of these shops the rest of the family think I've ent...

Re: What comics did you buy today?

Whizzer and Chips annual 1979, at a cost beginning with a £ and ending with a 5. Soon I'll buy the Topper Book 1961 at a different cost beginning with a £ and ending with a 5. (guesses, anyone?) Tricky one, depends on condition , where you buy them from and what you are prepared to pay.whizzer chip...
