Re: comics on c-d rom

My thoughts meandered back to my first year at university when I bought a reel-to-reel tape recorder, and it struck me that, from that moment, I was about to acquire what turned out to be a significant collection of music for nothing, simply by borrowing LPs from friends and recording them. Not exa...

Re: Panic at the Pumps!

I don't find bogies funny... but that's because I'm NOT EIGHT YEARS OLD. I'm sure I did when I was. Yes, but the obvious response to that is: "Did you find anything else funny when you were eight years old, apart from bogies?" And if not, can you think of a valid reason why the comic should not be ...

Re: This week's issue Take 2

Speaking of the recent past, the caption "Can you pick a bigger bogey?" was last seen on the Beano cover in issue #3576 (2011-03-12). It's not just unimaginative, it's unoriginal - and what's worse is that it's nothing to do with the story inside. It's just bogies for the sake of bogies, which is ex...

Re: comics on c-d rom

I'm no lawyer but I'd guess that a technical case could be made against reselling any comics to a second party. Wow, Phil. At a stroke you have delivered the technical coup de grace to the world's secondhand book and comic shops, a sizeable portion of the antique trade and much of eBay. May I sugge...

Re: Panic at the Pumps!

This week's 'totally gross stuff' tally: Dennis: Bogeys. In no way relevant to the plot, but splashed on the cover anyway - with a caption ("Can you pick a bigger bogey?") last seen on the cover little over a year ago. Ratz: None. Minnie: Overeating. Numskulls: Edd guzzles a load of beans, and burps...

Re: Dandy Annual 2013

You never know. People have stupid names in comics all the time. I like to think their full, real, given, actual names are Boss Badd, Fingers Badd and Knuck Badd. (Why not? "Cuddles" and "Dimples" are stupid names, too...) To speak nothing of Dennis T. Menace, Roger T. Dodger, etc., as introduced i...

Re: Becoming Ken...

The precise panel Baxendale was referring to was probably the "Any chance of a lift, matey?" one. It does seem to me, now I look at it closely, that he has somewhat less chin in the following issue than the preceding one. Not that much of a difference, but artistic evolution is rarely instant.

Re: Becoming Ken...

Ali Ha-Ha's dad deserves an honourable mention for his prolific employment of the word "spifflication" . In fact, characters being chased by furious other characters seems to be one of Ken Reid's very favourite punchlines. I thought he overused it, myself - from what I've seen of Ali Ha-Ha in partic...

Re: This week's issue Take 2

This week's original number was covered up by a picture of Fatty - I bet if someone checks it's original printing, it won't be the first strip, and they placed the picture on purpose to hide that. I, er, forgot to buy the Beano today (oops) but is it the one with the peanut butter in the balloon? T...

Re: Becoming Ken...

As the series progressed, drawn throughout in a sub-Baxendale style (though never by Leo himself), even these distinguishing features were eroded away as we discovered that Fatty, just like Georgie, still lived with his long-suffering mother; what's more he seemed to get significantly younger over ...

Re: What comics did you buy today?

I've just noticed that Raven has passed 2000 posts at the exact moment this very thread has passed 2000 posts (in fact, before I post this, both numbers are at 2001).

This isn't relevant to anything, I just like drawing pretty patterns in random numeric data.

Re: Nigel P's new strip..spoilerish ahead..wait till Wednesd

I've never read any of the original Banana Bunch, but am I right in thinking that hugely detailed splash panels like the one this week used to be something of a tradition? I thought the strip started off a bit shakily, but it's definitely getting into its stride now. All the restaurant-based gags th...
