Re: Glossy comics pros and cons..

comics which aren't in full colour, unless there aimed at older readers, would never sell these days. Don't you think? I wonder if the colour's all that important. But you may be right. I read this yesterday: "back in 1980, the Beano and Dandy cost 7p, which in today’s money is… 26p!" I don't know ...

Re: I don't get it. I just don't get it.

Steve, I believe the joke is that it was intended to say the headstone was put up by some of his closest friends, but it reads as if it says he has been 'Drowned in the river by some of his closest friends'.

Re: Glossy comics pros and cons..

This might seem strange to some of you, but I've always preferred the old, cheap paper comics used to be printed on, to the modern glossy. There's just something about it that was so much nicer somehow. I also used to love the old Radio Times when it was printed on the same sort of paper stock. It j...

Re: Drop the Celebrities from the Dandy Facebook Group

Comics have ALWAYS featured celebrities: From Dan Leno's Journal in 1901, to Film Fun, TV Fun, Cor!!, Krazy. . . even The Beano. I've come across this argument before, but I do think there's a difference between say, Film Fun using the silent comedy stars of the day, who lent themselves perfectly t...

Re: This weeks Dandy

But you admitted you loved them as a child. It's no bad judgement on them that you "as an adult" don't like them; they weren't created for the adult you. Why do you think you loved them as a child if they're so bad? I didn't say they were 'bad', I simply said they weren't very funny. Even as a chil...

Re: This weeks Dandy

Ha ha, yes, you may be right about me using the kids as an excuse to buy the Dandy. I wasn't expecting so much resistance to the idea of an all-ages comic (after all, the Dandy editor has stated in the interview I linked to that it is his aim), whilst I was expecting more reaction to my feeling that...

Re: This weeks Dandy

I'm not that keen on the idea of only buying comics for your kids that you enjoy yourself, though Fair point, again. I wouldn't say I'd only buy comics for the kids that I enjoy myself, but the fact that there are a few strips in the Dandy that I and the kids enjoy these days certainly doesn't dete...

Re: This weeks Dandy

The current Korky is dreadful, I agree. I don't think we're talking about adults buying it just for themselves. The way the Dandy editor put it in the interview I linked to was 'a father and son enjoying it together.' I buy it for my kids, ostensibly, but I enjoy (about half of) it myself. Like the ...

Re: This weeks Dandy

I think it's telling, though, Ginger, that you admit you loved it as a child , which means, whatever you think as an adult, they were getting it absolutely right for their target audience. Fair point, but with sales in freefall, isn't the Dandy editor's idea of making it a 'genuinely funny' all age...

Re: Drop the Celebrities from the Dandy Facebook Group

With regards to celebrities in comics, if you don't like it, then don't buy it. Simple. The prob lem for me is that I buy the comic because my children and I both enjoy about half of it, but we're paying for a comic we only actually read half of. I just wonder how many other people actually don't b...

Re: This weeks Dandy

I think the comparison between Mr Meecher and Nuke Noodle and David Law's work is a more valid one than was given credit for, it's the looseness and simplicity of the linework, I think. I'm not saying the artists are as good as David Law, but I do think the comparison deserved a little better treatm...
