Re: The Beano merges..UPDATE its not a merge!!!!!!!!!!

Only reprint this week was Bananaman. Wrong. Minnie is a reprint as well. One of the first ones Ken did. Speech bubbles give it away, plus the art is slightly different. Correction: It's exactly the first one Ken did. Issue #3423 (2008-03-15) - previous week's was by Tom Paterson. Normally Minnie g...

Re: Any Dandy Characters you DON'T like?

Glad to see I'm not the only person who prefers Brian Walker's to Hugh Morren's Smasher. In my case, the original Smasher just looked incredibly strange to my eyes - almost subhuman. The more realistic style suited him a lot better. From the previews I've seen of Lew Stringer's Smasher in the 2013 a...

Re: The Beano merges..UPDATE its not a merge!!!!!!!!!!

I think we've analysed and extrapolated everything we can from the cover - and as I mentioned earlier, a cover change doesn't necessarily imply radical changes inside. All we can do now is sit tight for a week and hope we're wrong.

Re: The Beano merges..UPDATE its not a merge!!!!!!!!!!

I can't see reprints being removed completely, as why start the reprints of Singled Out, under a new name, only to stop them after only two appearances? Where was the second? All I have to go on are the Beano and BeanoMAX covers, but they look almost identical. That can't be a good sign. This is lo...

Re: This week's issue Take 2

You're wrong. He took over Bash Street in 1962, but Danny on a Dolphin and Great Flood of London both ran in 1960, and you're right that Danny was his first Beano work. Pardon? Wrong about what? That's exactly what I just said. It was probably less ambiguous before I edited it, but 'first strip' im...

Re: The Beano merges..UPDATE its not a merge!!!!!!!!!!

And yet this one works! http://www.beano.com/characters/bananaman So the link is still there - The Three Bears is on both Characters toolbars yet they have no page and Bananaman is no where to be seen! Maybe they're planning to replace it with Beano's Got Talent? ;) Back on the subject of the...

Re: The Beano merges..UPDATE its not a merge!!!!!!!!!!

Well, Bananaman has gone from the Beano website's "Characters" toolbar so could we be seeing bye to that? Coo, he has as well! For the last six months the website's had a long-running glitch where if you hovered over the character bar, one of the entries was Bananaman, but if you clicked on the lin...

Re: This week's issue Take 2

Anyway , to go right back to why I originally mentioned the Bash Street Kids - this is the Beano of August 4th, 2012, so it must be exactly 50 years since David Sutherland drew his first strip in the Beano of August 4th, 1962. They've gone with a Great Flood of London tribute, but as far as I can t...

Re: The Beano merges..UPDATE its not a merge!!!!!!!!!!

I see there's also a 'mouth-behind-the-eyes' motif next to the newly-inserted "the Menace" text in the title. There seem to be two different versions of next week's cover - one at the bottom of the subscription advert, and one on the centre pages. I wonder if this is related to the recent change in ...

Re: This week's issue Take 2

To me, the strips in the 2002 and 2003 annuals look as if they've been drawn by two completely different artists, and I'm thinking of the 2003 one. If that was the same artist, he must have had a serious case of style evolution!

Re: This week's issue Take 2

I think your estimate 1998 is unlikely to be that far off - Dave's 2000th strip came in late 2009, shortly after issue 3500 He can only draw an absolute maximum of 52 strips in one year, which is 520 strips in 10 years (give or take). So, assuming he drew the Kids every week (and discounting the Be...

Re: This week's issue Take 2

To go back to artist milestones, I was interested to see David Sutherland's 1,500th Bash Street Kids strip in UBSS #3. Considering the number of strips he missed (he didn't attain 2,000 until years after Jim Petrie, in spite of the fact that they started almost at the same time), when this originall...

Re: Beano summer special number 1 out now WHSmiths

I've finally got hold of a copy. It definitely looks to me as if the reprints were sourced on the cheap - some of it is in the edited form used for Dennis and Bash Street annuals, and some (like the aforementioned football match) has even been lifted from the 'retro' annuals. Most bizarre is the "Su...

Re: comics on c-d rom

If there was some way of applying a unique digital watermark to the files on each DVD, were any pirate copies found to be in circulation, the source could be identified. Not a huge deterrent to the unscrupulous, I know, but may make people think twice about pirating. Such technology already exists,...
