scenes from the 'FUNNIES' that terrified me as a kid........

As an avid cinema-goer, I recently sat through 'SAW IV', , relatively unflinching........I know it is all fake.-----However, there was a time, many moons ago, when a T.V. screening of a creaky old EALING horror anthology film ['DEAD OF NIGHT' (1945)] with it's tale of a ventriloquist-dummy coming to ...

Drawing comics: help please!

D.C.Thomson are a reputable company, and i am pretty sure they will give you some sort of personal response and encouragement, if they see you have an inkling of talent.......i kept my first-ever submission to them, and i looked at it recently, and it looks TERRIBLE.......but they still gave me an e...

Maw 1 v Nigella 0

I have had a 5-minute scan thru' MAW'S cookbook in my local DILLON'S , and there is a healthy emphasis on traditional Scottish fry-ups, tablet, etc.......love the 'stained' look of the book..........altogether good stuff, health food is all very well, but has no nostalgic place in my heart ----i dig...

What do you like in the past ..the Dandy spanning 70 years?

'The PURPLE CLOUD' was fantastic.....it really grabbed my attention as a young 'DANDY'reader......this was a time when boxes of text, rather than word-balloons were often used, giving such strips a more 'serious' edge.....CHARLIE GRIGG done some fantastic stuff for 'DANDY' in this period, he often s...

Our Gang Dudley D Watkins Dandy 70 years young

In the early '70s, the local ODEON ran a Saturday-morning film club for kids [virtually no SAT morning kid's T.V. then]-------and one item used to be ancient [even in 1971] 20-min featurettes about a 'SNOOTY-' like gang, the leader, MICKEY, had a bowler hat and may even have been a very young MICKEY...

Our Gang Dudley D Watkins Dandy 70 years young

I remember seeing some wartime-propaganda 'SNOOTYS' at D.C.T.homson when i visited there around 1984........this was long before reprints had gained historical value, and this was the first time i had seen such early WATKINS work........i was struck by how relatively crude his drawing style at this ...

Strange comic policies of the 70s

They don't seem to celebrate GUY FAWKES night in comics with the same vigour as in bygone days......perhaps they have even stopped celebrating NOV 5 altogether in today's comics.........a shame, as these editions always seemed quite special........BAXENDALE in particular seemed to particular enthusi...

I have issue one - worth owt?

BLOODY HELL.......I remember picking up the last-ever 'BUSTER', ----and there is absolutely no way I would have guessed it would be worth 40 quid in such a [relatively] short space of time............I seem to remember that I.P.C./Fleetway/Interchangeable Corporate Cartels, INC. kept the comic going...

Pepper Street(The read with mum weekly)

I would rate 'PEPPER STREET' as somewhere inbetween 'BIMBO' and the nursery stuff we have today.......it was an admirable attempt to corner this market, with it's heart in the right place.

why is there no British answer to 'MAD?'

CORRECTION..........MICHAEL HEATH was CARTOON Editor of the 'SPECTATOR',-------you are probably familiar with old BORIS, who was the mag Editor, then........still could be, for all I know........

why is there no British answer to 'MAD?'

JEST treated meself to 'SPY vs. SPY 2', [reprints from U.S. satire mag: 'MAD',] ----and though it's not quite as good as VOL. 1: 'THE COMPLETE CASEBOOK' [which featured the entire 25+ years run of originator ANTONIO PROHIA'S anarchic spystrip, and quite possibly my most cherished cartoon anthology e...

Pepper Street(The read with mum weekly)

I was actually invited to submit 2 pages of original artwork for 'PEPPER STREET', which i duly supplied.........i handed over the pages in question, --to an editor's name who has appeared on these pages-----who duly nodded his approval-----and that was the last i heard, folks! Ah, the wonders of the...

Massimo Belardinelli

BELARDINELLI'S work always reminded me of a 19th-Century wood-engraver. A very early DREDD strip he done sticks in the mind, possibly because it was likely the only one he ever worked on........it centred around a gang stealing 'vintage' British cars, possibly a Morris Minor. Give me a hov-board ins...

'SEVENPENNY NIGHTMARE' is by far the best dedicated comic site i have came accross.........i wouldn't compare it with this site, this is the finest 'all-rounder' [while still being in-depth, and informative] website i know of, but for a single comic site it is fantastic.........[haven't checked the ...

Mighty Moth and Barney Bear

'T.V. COMIC'S' 'T.V.T ERRORS' was definately the most formulaic and repetitive U.K. strip i ever endured......it made I.P.C.'S most one-note strip idea seem innovative and fresh.........the 'T.V. TERRORS' strip almost always seemed to start with the same frame of doorman 'Hoppit' booting the kids ou...
