Re: Favourite Comic Strip

Have to say I loved "Raven on the Wing" as well- as you state Raven it was as much a horror at times as it was a footy story - I have the serial which ran circa April-May 1970 which features 'the Devourer of Darkness,' an evil spirit plaguing a tribe of gipsies who live in a Spanish cave village. T...

Re: Favourite Comic Strip

The other artist was Leslie Branton, though Stanley Houghton also did a one-off strip. 8) Thanks, Shaqui. I'd heard it might be Leslie Branton but hadn't had it confirmed. His style was very busy and decorative compared to Mike Noble's clear, clean style, and very classy, I thought! Did he do a lot...

Favourite Comic Strip

Oo-arr! I agree that Bumpkin Billionaires was a superior strip - Whoopee's best. On the surface it was just a rip-off of the Beverly Hillbillies TV series, but it was always strong and with its own style. Poor old Mister Bank Manager, nervously pursuing them as they handed out bags bulging with cash...

Re: Western strips in UK comics

... Lion 1966 Wildfire a wild horse in Texas Thanks for that interesting selection, Peter. I was thinking mostly of adventure strips, but it's really interesting to know Ken Reid did a western strip - that one seemed to have passed me by! From the '50s Dandy, a little research reveals. Actually, I ...

Re: Western strips in UK comics

As to the movie, where do you think inspiration for Clyde in 'Any Which Way Was Loose" came from! Those bikers are still scared of that ape! It just sounds to me like 'Snakes on a Plane' where you could tell the Hollywood moguls the title: 'The Sheriff's an Ape' and they'd instantly give you ...

Western strips in UK comics

Thanks for the welcome and the info.

'The Sheriff's An Ape' sounds unmissable - why hasn't the movie of it been made yet?

I'd be interested to hear which title and era Slade of The Pony Express ran in at its best. Google suggests both Rover and Hornet featured it.

Western strips in UK comics

I've found myself getting quite fond of westerns lately, and the interest naturally extends to comics. Of the American DC Showcase reprint books I certainly thought '70s Weird Western Tales star Jonah Hex's set had aged better by far than the other titles. Moving on to UK titles ... I bought a few 1...

Favourite Comic Strip

Hello - this seems like a nice thread to make a first post! Restricting it to five choices and from British weeklies, these are my top five. I love them, though they're ones I don't often see brought up or getting much coverage, so I wonder if anyone else is especially fond of them. RAVEN ON THE WIN...
