Re: Some help with a Princess magazine

Just as an addendum on this thread, a simple Google search has revealed that Evonne Goolagong Cawley MBE (1972) was born in 1951 and was still alive on 27 June 2020. There is no contact number unfortunately but a bit more in-depth research by doddyf3 might reveal one.

Re: Some help with a Princess magazine

As far as I can tell, there were only two DCT tennis-themed serials that might possibly have been an influence on Evonne Goolagong (Cawley after she married). The first is 'Wendy The Tennis Wonder', which appeared in BUNTY in 1959/60, but the tennis player, Wendy Woods, is a schoolgirl. The other is...

Re: Roy of the Rovers coming back?

When Roy Race first came to our notice, and to that of Alf Leeds, a talent scout for Melchester Rovers, he was playing for Milston Youth Club F.C. He would therefore be about 15 or 16 years old in that first instalment of 'Roy Of The Rovers'. By my reckoning he will now be about 80. Are we really go...

Re: Question about Rover free gifts

The 'Round Robin Spinner' was given away with issue 1704 of The ROVER (22 February 1958 - not 20 February as you assert, babington). Why did you choose to part company with your copy of my 'Free Gifts In The Big Five'? I have just one left for sale out of the 250 that D.C. Thomsons printed for me, s...

Re: Not just any old East London pie and mash shop

I wouldn't have thought, Steve, that pie, mash, and liquor covered with cold turkey would have been particularly tasty!!!!! Still, as my dad used to say, "There's no accounting for taste".

Hi Bruce,
Will you let us know, please, Bruce, if the book contain a chapter on all your country's football teams? :)

I have to agree with your last sentence, Steve, as most people would make a bad situation worse.

His girls may be interested too.

Which girls are those, Steve? I only have two sons, no daughters. My son, Andrew, has two daughters, Aurora and Kelsey, my son, Russell, has one, Lois.

Re: Phoenix's Future Plans

I did watch that first episode of Enid Blyton's 'Malory Towers' series, Steve. The first title in her series was First Term At Malory Towers , which was published in 1946. As it is a long time since I last read that novel, or the series for that matter, I can't be sure how close yesterday's opening ...

Re: What comics DIDN'T you buy today?

The reason that the free gifts given with THE NEW HOTSPUR and THE HORNET did not appear in my 'FREE GIFTS IN THE BIG FIVE' . Steve, is because neither of those titles is one of THE BIG FIVE , which comprised ADVENTURE , THE ROVER , THE WIZARD , THE HOTSPUR and THE SKIPPER , all of which were essenti...

Re: Spellbound reprint

While this possible future reprint of SPELLBOUND is of some interest, Helen, and given that you seem to be looking forward to its publication, I'm wondering if there is any particular reason why you have not already bought the full run in its original printing as a weekly story paper, even if the co...

Re: Your FIRST Ever Favourite Comic Character/Strip

Mine was a character called Pickford, a mysterious man with an aura of great power and authority. He just turned up one day at the ground of Redstoke United Football Club and told the manager that he was going to play inside-right for one of the two teams in a pre-season training session. His skills...

Re: Boloney Book Rover Comic Free Gift

'The Gold Star Broadway Boloney Book' was given away in issue 697 of the ROVER (August 24 1935). It was attached to 'The Gold Star Broadway Book - Marvels Of Land, Sea And Air', the latter vertically above the former, so you needed scissors to separate them. Two more Broadway Books were issued the f...

Re: Mandy free gift

By 'details' I am assuming, babington, that you just want the titles of the serials in issue 824 of MANDY . These were they:- Tara's Terrible Twin (first instalment) The Girl Next Door Before The Boat Comes In The Double Life Of Coppelia Brown Mary Had A Little Pig... (first instalment) The Champion...

Re: Mandy free gift

The 'Lucky Black Cat Brooch' was a free gift in MANDY 824 (October 30 1982). The following week TRACY 162 [November 6 1982] gave away a 'Lucky Dog Brooch'. A full-page advert for both appeared in MANDY 823 (October 23 1982) [came out on a Thursday] and TRACY 161 (October 30 1982) [came out on a Satu...
