Re: Looking for Judy comics from the early 80s... or information
Come to think of it, recycling basic concepts but altering the genders involved was not unknown at Fleetway, either. Two examples that spring to mind are Ken Reid's Faceache and Martha's Monster Make-up , both of which dealt with kids who could assume monstrous forms, and equally obviously Ivor Lott...

Re: Looking for Judy comics from the early 80s... or information
Yep, after nearly 50 years of buying the things I need to clear some space. Get rid of less essential things, like furniture, Lew. I second this. My study currently contains 69 comic and magazine boxes, some of which are doubling as tables and a desk, plus a computer, a phone and a chair. The compu...

Re: Looking for Judy comics from the early 80s... or information

As in...less comics? ......... *DOES-NOT-COMPUTE* er, no, sorry...not quite with you, there... Yep, after nearly 50 years of buying the things I need to clear some space. Plus...

Re: Looking for Judy comics from the early 80s... or information
I'd never read girl's comics at all until this year when I bought a load of Diana weeklies on eBay! Tried a few other titles since, but not too impressed with Bunty, June, etc. Diana seemed to offer the most interest art-wise to collectors, - judging from the few dozen I bought at any rate. Lew Try...

Re: Looking for Judy comics from the early 80s... or information
I later lived in the UK, for many years, but by then I'd passed the comic age. I'm back in Canada now, which is why I can't pop down to the newsagents to see what comics are still on sale... er, what ones *are* still going? (And still I'm reeling in shock that there are no girl comics! Even when I ...

Re: Billy Whizz - how did he get his skill?
Wilson was in stark contrast to Thomson's other famous fleet-footed athlete Alf Tupper who dieted almost exclusively on fish and chips ( fried in beef dripping no doubt). Both great runners but whereas the perennially whippet-thin Wilson celebrated birthdays that wouldn't shame an old testament pat...

I always wondered why Wilson never got pneumonia. He never even seemed to bother finding shelter-what happened if it rained in the night?felneymike wrote:Living on a remote moor and living on herbal stew and hares never did Wilson any harm, after all.

Re: Billy Whizz - how did he get his skill?
Just to add, as I recall Smiffy's full name was once given in The Beano as James Smith. This has also been cited in at least one reference book I've read, though I can't recall offhand which one. It was the 1950s themed Beano and Dandy 60 Years book. And it wasn't mentioned in Beano to my knowledge...

Re: Doctor Who mini comic
To answer the original poster's other question, the penguin was a shape shifting alien (a 'Whifferdill' if memory serves) named Frobisher, who traveled with the Doctor for some years in the strips. He was stuck as a penguin after contracting a virus. Frobisher, by the way, travelled with the sixth ...

Re: The MANDY, JUDY and BUNTY forum
Earlier today I put forward the suggestion that a thread could be started for those members who have observations they would like to make about Thomsons' girls' story paper Mandy . There is no real reason to limit it to Mandy , so why not include Judy and Bunty ? If you want to talk about character...

Re: Billy Whizz - how did he get his skill?
it's a skill that jumps generations, because Grandpa Whizz is fast too. Throughout History there have been Billy Whizz ancestors...like at Waterloo...Billy has often looked at his photo album or history book..so a fast Gene!! Let's see what we know: He can reach superhuman speeds (e.g. Everest and ...

Re: R.I.P The Dandy Masterhead....
unless...... Xtreme becomes monthly and carries on as the Toxic imitation that it currently is and we actually get our weekly Dandy back? That would be great even if it had, for economical reasons, a large number of reprints. I'm not talking purely from a nostalgic standpoint either: my 8 year old ...

Re: Billy Whizz - how did he get his skill?
Cuthbert's father looks quite like Teacher, if you go back to the 1980s annuals - while Leo was responsible for the original designs etc (apart from Cuthbert for obvious reasons), I think that the information in the strips Dave Sutherland drew in the 1970s and 1980s could be considered "official" w...

Re: MOST `Nauseating` comic character of all time!
I've been reading a fair bit of Sparky lately, ad to be honest I'm finding myself in agreement with alanultron, on that strip in particular. DC Thomson put out a lot of stuff in the 60s and 70s which now looks highly dubious, and most of it seemed to be in Topper or Sparky for some reason. I wouldn...
