Re: Those aliens look a bit familiar...
All well and good, Lew, but IF the characters are rip-offs, without official licence ( And it's an ASSUMPTION that that's the case, I don't know, perhaps as a DC Thompson employee you can shed some light?) :- but if they ARE, doesn't that seem a little hypocritical to you? You must know better than ...

Re: Those aliens look a bit familiar...
For those asking for an image, I found the cover on the Beano Facebook page:

Someone else comments about being 'confused about the Simpsons aliens', too. (Not surprisingly)

Yes, I realise that, now, Phoenix. That's sort of what I meant when I said 'I appreciate now that that's not necessarily the case'.

Re: Those aliens look a bit familiar...
Oh that's interesting. I was just going to say, they've appeared quite a lot lately, drawn by more than artist, so it seems to me it's an editorial decision rather than just an artist going out on his own. But then again, that is just an assumption.

Re: Those aliens look a bit familiar...
Sorry, there I go assuming stuff again!:- I had thought that on the Beano forum I might be addressing people that read the Beano. I appreciate now that that's not necessarily the case. If you look at the alien on the cover of the current issue, and then do a quick google image search 'Simpsons alien...

Re: Those aliens look a bit familiar...
Okay, Phoenix, have it your way. Let me try again, putting all assumptions aside: Has anyone noticed that the Beano has been using the aliens from the Simpsons recently (there's no assumption there, it's as clear as day), and does anyone know if DC Thomson has officially licensed the characters, or ...

Re: Those aliens look a bit familiar...
Rather a lot of assumptions there, Ginger! I make it only one:- that they haven't licensed the characters formally. I have stated that it is only an assumption, and left the possibility open that the characters have been officially licensed (whilst admittedly not being very convinced that this is t...

Those aliens look a bit familiar...
This has been bugging me for a while, now. I'm sure I can't be the only one to have noticed that the aliens that the Beano are using happen to be identical to the aliens in the Simpsons? Perhaps DC Thompson have licensed the characters, do you think? Or perhaps they've looked carefully at the legal ...

Re: Are weekly comics doomed?
Very good point, Bigwords. I would also argue that a magazine is a different thing to a comic, anyway. A magazine is, in my dictionary, 'a publication containing miscellaneous articles by different writers'. I think it's broadened out even more nowadays (old dictionary) but importantly it's characte...

Re: Are weekly comics doomed?
I think I've mentioned in the past that Mike Stirling organised a pile of complimentary Beanos and other children's mags for the kids' goodie bags at my wedding in February. Are you sure you're not a company man, Andy?! By the way, I don't mean to be picky, but this phrase 'children's mags' is almo...

Re: Are weekly comics doomed?
there are a few notable attempts at extremely low-cost publishing which failed (albeit in magnificent, noble ways) the most interesting being the attempt to publish a newspaper full of comic art back in the... 90s? I don't have the details to hand, but I am sure that it didn't last nearly as long a...

I loved that, too, and it's a great idea, Phil, but perhaps that was their market test.

Re: This week's issue - Take 4
I don't know if there's much to debate about, it's obviously a filler page, but what I would say is that there are 22 pages of comics in the issue:- compare that to any other comic on the shelves and it looks pretty good. Was it in this thread I was talking about the TV tie-in 'kids mags'? Can't rem...

Re: Are weekly comics doomed?
Good points, both.
By my reckoning pocket money would need to be about £10 a week, then, to be comparable (if we take £2.50 as average comic price) Don't know what the average pocket money is, but I certainly don't give my kids that much.
