Thing is, publishers have to please retailers. Cover mounted gifts act as an incentive for retail giants to stock more copies, as does the higher cover price. The cost of the free gifts is minimal. Apparently they still sell despite the price rises so it doesn't seem likely to change anytime soon. ...
