Re: Doctor Who 2011

Well, I enjoyed it after hating the last series. Seems to have gone back to the family horror of Blink, rather than last season's children's comedy fantasy.

Re: No DFC in Guardian & Tokyopop closing. What's this tell

Paperview have some cool distribution ideas going on - shows some imaginative business acumen can see some successful sales. I don't know about Paperview (a google didn't give much info either) but distro is really the problem. Newsagent distributors make it virtually impossible to get comics into ...

Re: No DFC in Guardian & Tokyopop closing. What's this tell

Manga's popularity has waned significantly. DC closed their version last year, along with a good few other Manga companies.

Re: Promo insert for Bullet no. 1

Dunno, but Bullet's much under-rated. Curiously one of the very few reasonably successful comic that never had an annual.

Re: Care to vote?

I like 2000AD but can't stand Dredd's character. Some great stories, sure, but a miserable, one-dimensional, fascist bully-boy of a character. He'd never get my vote (even though he's had some of the best stories). I didn't vote for Charley. One of the greatest strips I've ever read but more the sto...

Re: The Retro Beano and Dandy!! Could this happen?

Depends what you mean by work. I suspect it would outsell CftC when it was published. Probably by some margin. But I've no idea what the break even figure is for DCT. Remember, it has to be worth paying all those extra salaries. For the record, I would have thought it would be a decent seller for th...

Re: The storypaper returns! (or an updated penny dreadful)

On sale will be Planetfall graphic novel collecting the Guard Dogs, the Deterrent and Damage Circus, whilst there's Dead and Ouija 1 and 2 collected together in another book. I had hoped to start a run of historical pocket book comics called Warpsite (Celts, Romans, Vikings, Civil War etc) but strug...

Re: The Retro Beano and Dandy!! Could this happen?

Even though I was never a fan of either of these comics, I reckon that's a good shout. Classics from the Comics under a different name, sure, but that can make all the difference.

Re: The storypaper returns! (or an updated penny dreadful)

Scaling up to modern earnings, the 4-page penny dreadful would cost about £2.50 in today's money. Seems a lot for so little.

The storypaper returns! (or an updated penny dreadful)

Launching at the London Comic Expo spexpo.co.uk (12th March 2011), the Starscape Storypaper makes it's first appearance. Taking it's inspiration from the Victorian Penny Dreadfuls (small booklets with a startling cover, plus text stories packed full of excitement) and boys' storypapers (prose magazi...

Re: The Phantom

Mandrake (1934) was before Dr Occult but they're only considered superheroes due to the rise of the Phantom, leading to Superman, Batman etc. I don't think either Mandrake or Dr Occult would have led to the gaudy costumed super powered hero if the Phantom hadn't been there to set a trend. It's not t...

Re: The Phantom

I got the later version of Charlton's version, where it had crossed from the childish Shazam/Plastic Man kind of stories (not dissing that - I'm a big fan of both) to an astonishingly good proto-realistic style that wouldn't have been out of place in the grim'n'gritty era. I know there's a big debat...

Re: CLiNT: New newsstand comic from Mark Millar/Titan!

And do you buy every magazine that comes out to find out if you like it or not? I'm not going to buy Antiques Monthly, as I have no interest in what the title says about the magazine. Likewise, the articles will also be of zero interest and, if it starts criticising something that I enjoy, I'm even ...

Re: CLiNT: New newsstand comic from Mark Millar/Titan!

I'd been avoiding this. Everything about it, the articles, the title, the editorial, shouts that it's everything I despise.

Read it. Liked it.

Comics are (generally) good. What more can I say?
