Re: Old Comic Mergers - What If?
I would have loved to see Cheeky (as the headliner) incorporating Whizzer and Chips, with only 3 pages of Cheeky plus keeping Sweet Tooth, Joker, Junior Rotter, Superstore and others. Alternatively IPC could have kept Monster Fun going (dropping Mickey Mouse earlier) and have had Wow! merge with it ...

Re: New strip.
Congrats Lew. Tim Quinn and Dicky Howett's '80s and '90s strips for Dr Who were good fun too. I liked the occasional full pager they did back then.
Plus perfect timing with the new series on Saturday. The magazine must have seen your 'Dr Flu'

Re: First female-led strip in 2000AD?
Halo Jones was really first class. A shame Alan Moore will never bring her back, though I can understand his reasons. Book three had some very adult themes running through it, and is worth re-reading. I was thinking though that at least 2000ad had strong female supporting characters such as Anderson...

Re: Will The Dandy ever return?
Thanks Lew and Raven. I think some boarding schools like Harrow are still like Winker’s school. Harrow still has the straw hats! And apparently the pupils are told NOT to use public transport so as to mix with comprehensive school children! He did enjoy Bananaman and Desperate Dan and I don’...

Re: Will The Dandy ever return?
I bought the Dandy Summer Special 2014 for the oldest nephew. Previously he was an occasional Dandy reader in 2012. He just turned 11 and starting secondary in September. The thing that disappointed him was that so much of the material was reprinted. He found old-school 'Winker Watson' stories very ...

Metal Men – not forgotten
I was checking out the estimated value of some of mine and brother(s) comics recently. DC’s Metal Men issues 1-56 are apparently worth £1,370 (VFN for all issues) according to the http://www.comicpriceguide.co.uk/us_comic.php?tc=metalmen1 – though this is likely to be a conservative estimate for the...

Re: What comics to keep???
David those old Viz’s are very valuable. Try them on ebay with the oldest ones split up and the later ones as lots. Also thanks geoff42 for the lovely reply and good luck collecting every comic in history. :) My favourite old Viz issue was the 'Free packet of crisps' (I think possibly No 25). For yo...

Re: 2000AD or Starlord?
Thank you colcool007 and Tony Ingram for the kind comments. If there are any forum readers who have not read Dredd’s Necropolis it’s very good too with Judge Anderson and a young Judge Giant (son of Judge Giant senior). I must say though I did enjoy the re-invented/return of the Strontium Dog storie...

Re: 2000AD or Starlord?
I loved the Dredd epic’s of the Judge Child and The Cursed Earth but never actually enjoyed Dredd’s character . I preferred characters such as Tweak* and Judge Hershley and the blind bandaged fella + his blind horse. Both had a run in with the Angel Gang (1980) and they wanted revenge. So for me und...

Re: Criteria for closing a title
Over at UK Marvel which did have some new material, there was a big discussion on each titles letters pages about 'glossy covers' ever since they did away with them to save money towards the very end of the ’70s. Eventually the glossy covers won through with even some colour by the mid 1980s. Though...

Re: What comics to keep???
My younger brother has a solution to this – keep all the comics that he wants to keep with our octogenarian Dad . About 4 big boxes. His wife won’t let him bring these and another 40 big boxes of film memorabilia to their 5 bedroom mansion with vast empty loft storage space. She doesn't let the neph...

Re: Criteria for closing a title
Thanks Lew. Appreciated. :) So Monster Fun, Cheeky, Jackpot and even later Whoopee* did not necessarily have lower sales than the titles that the usually longer-lived titles of Whoopee; Whizzer and Chips and Buster. *Presumably the other titles (other than perhaps Action for alleged voilence?) Valia...

Criteria for closing a title
Probably no one will know for sure, but was there a criteria for closing IPC (later Fleetway) titles based on sales? Or did the closure depend on the editor’s thoughts on longevity of the title. As both Monster Fun (with Buster) and Cheeky (to Whoppee) featured heavily some great characters for 5 or...

Re: A sex change for Thor
This subject was covered in Camelot 3000 – way back in the early ’80s with Sir Tristran. Before Watchmen this was easily one of the best short run comics in history. If you have never heard of it then check it out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camelot_3000 British comics artist Brian Bolland will ne...
