You are absolutely correct, Mr Phoenix-Rising!
SID: yes the Bamforth book is a most satisfactory addition to my comic-related books, I still absolutely love this facet of British cartooning.

Re: Recommended Comics Documentaries
The best story along these lines I ever heard was about the veteran Express cartoonist Carl Giles who shunned self-glorification and would not appear on TV despite many attempts by the broadcasters. One day he was busy cartooning at his huge desk and an uninvited TV unit crept up behind him and atte...

I still never told her because she meant well!
Morally it was better putting it into the charity shop, though.
But yes sometimes it is better not to offend the feelings of those giving gifts.

Re: Recommended Comics Documentaries
Futureshock is avaiaible in hi-def [at least the version I have is] and the animated graphics are very well done---quite a bit of bad language though!
Great for covering the early genesis of the comic.

Re: Christmas 2016 - What Do You Want/Hope To Get for Xmas?
A few years back, I got the deluxe HISTORY OF THE BEANO for Christmas----later on, my well-intentioned sister unwittingly got me a second copy in error.
I put the brand-new double copy into a local charity shop---it wasn't unsold for very long!

Last year it was a book on Bamforth saucy seaside postcards,
This year it's the book: 25 years of VIZ,,,I already have it, it is hidden away until the 25th.

Re: WHY DID `ODHAM'S FAIL?
for me it was: read all my older cousins' comics 'til I was 7/ then start getting my 'own' Sparky for the next 6 years, and much switching around of all the funny comics--getting most of the early copies of all the IPC funnies----- til I was 14. [was unable to hang onto a single original comic from ...

Re: WHY DID `ODHAM'S FAIL?
I could only afford two or three comics a week in the 60s---ah, so much choice--------and so little doobs at the time.

Re: WHY DID `ODHAM'S FAIL?
;homogenous' is an apt description, Phil!
I was very young when the Odhams-IPC-Fleetway transition occurred, but boy was it painfully evident--the spirit of Odhams was sorely absent.

Re: WHY DID `ODHAM'S FAIL?
After IPC/Fleetway took over some of the Odhams characters near the end of the 60s, I felt the soul had been sucked out of what made their early material so unique. [Was SMASH! the one that got published by IPC at the end? It got totally transformed, at any rate.] I liked the Fantastic Four [in star...

Re: WHY DID `ODHAM'S FAIL?
Looking at the readers letters printed in these comics, [ in the latter 60s ] many fans of this publishing houses' comics said they would have loved to have bought ALL of the titles, but they couldn't afford them all . I assume WHAM! [their first 'Swinging Sixties' funny paper] made money and the Di...

Re: Donald Trump/'Bad Bob Booth'
Trump has taken to wearing a bullet-proof vest all the time [well, maybe not in the shower, but who knows] ever since a Mexican Drugs Baron put a price of '100 M US D ' upon his head. Unfortunately for Trump, he has an unfeasibly large head as a target. Trump is most certainly 'the man of the year' ...
