Re: Cristina y Sus Amigos - Manuel Cuyas
Evil dolls, haunted dolls, friendly dolls, or ordinary dolls with tales to tell and lessons to teach were all part and par for the course in girls' comics. Hannah in the House of Dolls (Bunty), The Many Faces of Moppet (Mandy), The Dream House (Tammy), The Evil Eyes of Tearful Tina and The Curse of ...

Re: Cristina y Sus Amigos - Manuel Cuyas
Let me guess: Taylor puts a curse on the doll in revenge for his dismissal and it starts causing misery and havoc.

Re: Valda, from Mandy
In the real world I wouldn't want to go anywhere near Maisie's magic brooch in case I accidentally I wished I was dead or something! :? - Phil R. That's not how the brooch works. It does whatever Maisie says while it is glowing. A lot of the humour comes from Maisie saying something she doesn't mea...

Re: Valda, from Mandy
I don't like Maisie's Magic Eye. It feels like 99% of the situations Maisie gets into could be averted if she didn't wear the stupid brooch all the time (even in bed!). The only conclusion I can come to is that she enjoys causing chaos for those around her. Maybe Maisie wears the brooch all the tim...

Re: Lucky's Living Doll
I imagine girls' comics took a lot of inspiration from Enid Blyton, whether consciously or unconsciously. They must have known their readers would be familiar with Blyton as well and would have taken their cue from that as well.

Re: Cristina y Sus Amigos - Manuel Cuyas
Tammy and Jinty still had their share of ballet and horse stories, even if they were trying to break away from the traditional mould.

Re: Cristina y Sus Amigos - Manuel Cuyas
On reading the blog and seeing "Angela's Angels" from Jinty credited to him, I was very surprised. I'm currently re - reading all my Jintys at the moment and strangely enough, I was wondering who could possibly have drawn "Angela's Angels". Looking at it again, I can see something of Cuyas' style a...

Re: Favourite characters/stories in girl's comics
By the 90s Bunty did try to modernise The Four Marys, including introducing a boys school, introducing the new thinking head teacher Mitchell and having them were ordinary clothes as well as their uniforms. I don't think you'd have to take them out of boarding school to modernise them. I did always...

Re: Favourite characters/stories in girl's comics
I know what Ruth means - especially as Patty is still being successfully published. On the other hand, there's an honorable tradition of old, discontinued characters being revived for a modern audience with a 'whatever happened to' spin. This is particularly noticeable with superheroes like DC's Ju...

Re: Favourite characters/stories in girl's comics
I wonder if Penny's Place, the Comp or Pam of Pond Hill would work in television? The latter two might be considered too close to Grange Hill. After all, they were inspired by that series. Someone in Tammy suggested a Bella Barlow television series. Thinking about it, I'm not sure that would work be...

Re: Favourite characters/stories in girl's comics
Well, as a matter of fact Purita has beein thinking for a while now -and she's talked about it in different interviews- in allowing to make Patty's World into a tv series but some of us fans are against it. Since it would be a Spanish production, they would probably turn it into a "teens" tv series...

Re: Favourite characters/stories in girl's comics
However, a lot of the stories from girl's comics would make terrific TV series I agree & this alpha male heroine addict will confess, that I've written a few ideas down for TV series based on these strips. Have jotted a few for "Meet The Days" - new name for The Happy Days to avoid fonz & shark-jum...

Re: Favourite characters/stories in girl's comics
Looking through some old copies of June I just came across yet another female 'Cat' character from April 1972. What's more this one seems to bear an astonishing similarity to her DC Thomson namesake. As can be seen in the episode of 'Mark of the Cat' shown below she also wears a tight-fitting black...

Re: Blunderbirds
Philcom: Thanks. It's possible there is some confusion and it was Eagle, not Buster, that printed Blunder Birds. Or maybe Buster did reprint some Blunder Birds or ran a strip with the same title. When did Eagle print Blunder Birds anyway, please?
