Re: The Beezer 1962

I agree it does look a bit messy and dizzy distracing with those page set ups. Think they may have been trying too hard to cram too much in on limited space. Many of the strips were much better when given just the full page in the 1970s - or in some cases giving half a top od page for one and bottom...

Re: The British edition of Mad

Thanks for my corrections - I'd no idea it was running for for many years (ie during 1960s).

Any idea when the last Biritsh Mads came out?

Re: The Happy Days (Sue Day)

That was one of the greatest strengths of The Happy Days - making use of a good and varied selections of support characters - mainly Sue's family (including Aunts and Grandparents), but also others like Sue's best friend Edie and her twin brother Tom, and recurring villain Willie Jeavons, spoilt Pet...

Re: Cilla Black has died

My fave Cilla tracks: Big hits: "Surriund Yourself With Sorrow", "Conversations" and "Somthing Tells Me..." (which had the ace "La La La Lu" on the b-side, as featured in the film version of "Please Sir!"). Smaller hits that should've been bigger: "I Only Live To Love You", "If I Thought You'd Ever ...

Re: The Happy Days (Sue Day)

This reminds me of a conversation I had with a bookshop co-owner: She commented how there were no women writing girls' comics until Tammy and Jinty eras in 1970s. I pointed out Jenny Butterworth being one of the first with The Happy Days from 1960. We later both agreed that the 1960s is a very overl...

Re: The British edition of Mad

I think the British Mad did sent up a lot of our TV shows.

Its first edition featured Tom Baker Dr Who on cover; one of its last in 1986 had Alfred P Nutt on cover with characters from EastEnders.

Re: Numbskulls idea

I think Viz later did a strip about a humourless person called DC Thomson to cock a snook at DCT ban. But by then I'd long since stopped reading Viz (from 1993) as it was no longer funny and trying to shock for laughs. (and its founders lived in mansions away from real world of inspiration). Thanks ...

Re: What comics did you buy today?

Almost forgot to mention, I took a trip to Stockport's Book & Record Fair last Sunday; I bought from a stall run by one of the founders of Crikey! Magazine who left acrimoniously (sorry forgot his name already). We had a good chat about the magazine and comics in general; could've talked all day. An...

Re: Retro TV

I can't understand why they cut the Thorson Avengers episodes with 3 to go, as the last one would have fell on Friday. And Requiem and Bizarre were 2 of the better ones. However I do feel that Thingumijig and Pandora were 2 of the worst episodes. Thing... is a clunker which doesn't scare much like t...

Re: The Topper Beezer Top 100

Nice ones I Spy! Love the amnazing attention to detail - esp in Baby Craockett as I remember reading the later less detailed ones in the 70s. What's great is how little dialogue is used and the pictures used to do the talking. In some Beezer annuals there would be a great Banana Bunch text story wit...

Re: The Happy Days (Sue Day)

Nice one Philcom! That Mr Knowall sure reminds me of people I've known - one guy who all his peers looked up to like a messiah! (once he had less haor than knowall and still is one at almost 50). And in female form - my older sister, whose knowallness was encouraged by my parents (who could bnever r...

Re: Numbskulls idea

I think there are a lot of concepts in UK comics that can inspire boooks/TV/films - and there are plenty which ought to be taken up but haven't yet. I got thinking - correct me if I'm wrong - but wasn't there once a short-lived US sitcom in circa 1900s about a bloke abd the comedy revolved around th...

Re: June fortnightly in 1974?

No worries, Kashgar.

I've just been wondering if DC Thomson's publications got affected by the 3 day week too?

Or did IPC suffer both the 3 day week and internal problems too?

Re: June fortnightly in 1974?

Hi Kashgar I'm not doubting your original post (sorry if it appeared like that). It was just a theory and spotting of it coinciding with 3 day week. The vendor I was buying off did mention IPC was experiencing industrial action and that the Lion comic also suffered ie didn't get published some weeks...

Re: What comics did you buy today?

Visited Stockport's Vintage Village in its market on Sunday - got a 1973 Look- In , complete with centre poster, featuring Ziggy era David Bowie. SOme great well drawn strips inside - also interesting looking at regional TV listings, when there were things to watch on TV. Then also from an open 2nd ...
