Re: Beano Website

DC Thomson's websites are all down. http://www.dcthomson.co.uk, http://www.beanotown.com and http://www.dandy.com are all saying "Oops, Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage", as though they don't exist. :( EDIT: 10.30am - it seems they're back up. I wonder what happened? :? To be honest, I ...

Re: This week's issue

Cartoonist? That would be Ken Harrison, Iain McLaughlin is the writer if I'm not mistaken. You're spot on. Mis-quoting the Beatles... I am he and he is me - and I'm definitely not an artist. I can't draw a convincing stick man. I'll stick to writing scripts. On the other hand, Ken Harrison is brill...

Re: David Parkins

Thanks for that link. I think you're right I Spy, his website does show some of his newspaper cartoons. There's also some of his Beano stuff up there (mostly covers and annuals), though he does mention Fred's Bed on it - he drew the majority of the strips in The Beezer and Topper, I'd be surpr...

Re: Bloopers

I don't have a copy of Classics From The Comics to hand (despite my handle I don't work on Classics) so I won't comment on the individual Spotted Dick story in question but since I wrote most of the Spotted Dicks (one of my very first jobs) I can background it a bit. Spotted Dick was mostly drawn by...

Re: Bloopers

They also said on the contents page "Doctor Who audio games " competition - it should be audio books , and is named as such on the front cover and the actual competition page. Even that isn't quite right really though, since they're full cast dramas. :offtopic1: Doesn't one of the Dr Who audio writ...

Shameless self-publicity time... The character for this week's wallpaper is being picked by the visitors to beanotown.com - if you have a preference for which character or story we use, let us know at beanotown.com and we'll use one of the suggestions as the subject for this week's wallpaper. \End o...

Re: Bill Ritchie

the girl sitting on the desk is Anne Kemp who would become the final editor of the paper. Can you please check this information, Kashgar, because a few years ago I asked Calum Laird about the editors of Thomsons' girls' papers and he told me that although there had been a fair number of female sub-...

Re: Beano Website

The latest download is Classic Biffo - which they said was drawn by Dudley D Watson! Somebody's been a right Smiffy with that one! That Smiffy would be me, I'm afraid. Hands up. My mistook. No idea where my head was at with that one. It's fixed now. I shall go and sit on the naughty step for ...

Bill Ritchie

It's with great sadness that I have to pass on the news that Bill Ritchie passed away on Monday of this week. Bill's enormous catalogue of work will be well known to every British comics fan. For those of us who worked with Bill, he was one of the folk you always looked forward to seeing. You knew y...

Re: Wallpapers

Thanks for that. I was interested to know, and also you seem to be writing for some of the best strips at the moment. You can find something interesting to be had from writing most strips. I've been doing this for 25 years (give or take a few months) and in that time there are only 2 or 3 stories I...

Re: Wallpapers

It's a Tom Paterson illustration, lifted from a Singled Out and then had some magic mojo done to it by our lay-out artist on his computer so that the lines wouldn't break up when the image was scaled up.

Re: Wallpapers

Not really on topic, but which strips do you regularly write, Classic Comics? My regulars are Minnie the Minx, Fred's Bed, Ratz, 60 Second Dennis, Ball Boy and Super School. We take turns on writing the longer stories which appear roughly once a month. Lord Snooty was mine until a few months back w...

Re: Wallpapers

From the sounds of it, they had complaints that the wallpapers were always Dennis and never anyone else, so they're just rotating the characters now instead of using the covers - which are now just a random frame from Dennis's story anyway. There haven't been any complaints about the Dennis & Gnash...

Re: Minnie Christmas Download

For a while now there have been discussions within the company about how we can best preserve our old comics - how to scan them, how to store the scans, the logistics of it and so on - it's an absolutely huge job potentially involving tens of thousands of pages. I don't know what decisions have been...

Re: Minnie Christmas Download

It's brilliant, ain't it? I'm normally very pleased at how the website operates since the D&G relaunch, but I think they've outdone themselves for the Christmas period. I really do. I think it's a great location to remind today's youngsters of the quality of work done previously. Some stuff just ca...
