What comics did you buy today?

A trip to Manchester netted a varied haul. First from the Comic Fair:
A 1980 Look-In
A 1977 Radio Times
Crikey! Magazine no.2
2 2068 (1968) TV21s (before disastrous TV Tornado merger)
A 1985 and an 86 edition of S.I.G> Gerry Anderson fanzine
1965 Fireball XL5 annual
Filmed In Supermarionation book background story of said TV serials (fascinating)
Misty Jordi Badia Collection (of quality reprints)

Then a trip to Empire Exchange :
2 Football League Review books from the 1960s
No/2 edition of Bonnie (short lived nursery comic - I have a mega bargain job lot pile of these bought from 30th Century Comics a few years ago).

In fact I'll add that I did have those editions of SIG back during 1986. I got them from a now long gone but much missed comic shop on Cowley Road in Oxford. Shop had large image of Halo Jones painted on its window. It had many editions/back copies of said fanzine plus many others as well.

This was back when Cowley Road was a great bohemian like area with lots of interesting quirky shops, pubs and a cinema. Sadly that's all long gone now, many Eastern European and Asian shops now. Area been in the news over paedophile ring scandal. Tip of an iceberg I'd say.../ many dark areas of Oxford covered up to protect its tacky tourism.

Anyhow, I threw those away years later, which I regretted and was reminding myself of it only last week, This was because the mid 1980s were a very dark and un happy time for me and I hastily wanted to remove all reminders, including my fascination with the Anderson's shows I had then (but kept from my parents as they'd use anything I like for barbed and hurtful criticism).

I became superstitious for many years regarding any watching or purchase of anything Anderson brought bad luck! I seemed to have never ending trauma back then.

Many years later, I made the break to North West England in 2000s, then got my diagnosis of Autism in 2017, aged 47, which put things into perspective, I now realise just how much my liking and discovering and most of all watching of not just the Anderson's shows but other 1960s/70s UK Tv, some cult, some obscure, had kept me going and helped me stay alive.

I've earlier mentioned on this site how The Prisoner helped, as did the Avengers, helped. Even though I was often surrounded by no one to share these interests with, often surrounded by those who'd often sneer and smear me with hurtful labels. Those I did find just kept making arrogant assumptions which they made sure I'd always be to satisfy them.

And despite Viz and Student Grant portrayed them as Anderson fans, when the 1990s repeats were on BBC2, none of the students I knew watched nor liked those shows, ridiculing and humiliating those who did (majority were rich spoilt "rah" students who ruled the Unis, including ex Polytechnics).

I think I should write a book on how Anderson TV shows saved my life and just about kept me sane and from asylums. Then do one of other UK Tv shows and one of comics. Use when repeats were being shown or comics being bought as markers for pivotal points in my life. Perhaps I should write?

Curiosity grew thanks to a few e bay online views inside said comics.

The interesting things on buying actual originals is seeing the other support strips and also the letters pages and old advertising. All these help give a real feel for the time of publication. I find social history and capturing and living it somehow fascinating.

Had delivery of a nice Dandy comic no.757 from 1956 today in VG condition. Also received my Buster comic from the 16th December 1989 for my Tom Thug art in the mail. Only problem was. I already had it. So pointless uploading it twice to the forum. On the positive side. Two are better than one I suppose.

Just had delivery of another Scream comic. This time it's Scream issue no.2 from 1984 with free gift spooky spider still attached in VG+ condition. Got 5 of these now.

I love the original comics,whatever they might be,for the letters,adverts etc.

Picked up The Hanna-Barbera Fun Book (1983) for £1 in Deptford Flea Market today. 192 pages of US reprints. Bought it mainly to index on GCD.
