Old comics fanzines

Post by Lew Stringer »

Following on from the discussion on the stripzines thread I've added some scans and info about comics fanzines of the 1970's to my blog:

Sorry to "spam" it here but I thought some might be interested.

Excellent Lew - I really enjoyed your article and cover scans on the old Fanzines, it really brought back some memories putting names to the editors as well as the actual fanzines. I always wanted to see a copy of the Panelologist as I never managed to track down a copy, it looks interesting. I managd to pick up a few old 1970s fanzines in Novemeber in Glasgow for a few pence each - Comics Unlimited, 2 x Graphic Sence, BEM and Starburst all very good. I loved the enthusiasim that went into them altough I would imagine todays fans would find them a bit amateurish. Thanks again for this.

Also want to add my appreciation for your fanzine overview - really interesting. These were a bit before my time - I didn't get into fandom until 1984, but managed to collect a few back issues of some of these titles at Westminster and so on.

Thanks again, your blog is proving an excellent read on every post.

Good find! Not quite the same as promoting comics fandom though, like the Odhams comics did. That's an ad for an exhibition; something entirely different to a convention. IPC were never shy of mentioning old comics, such as the classic pages that appeared in Whoopee (or another comic), but as far as I know, other than in the pages of 2000AD, they never promoted any of the annual conventions or fanzines. (In fact, as Kev O'Neill or Dez Skinn have said in interviews, they found that most editors at IPC back then considered adults who enthused about comics to be a bit "weird". )

Looking at my old diaries I discover it is exactly 30 years since I discovered fandom and fanzines.

In Jan 1977 my friend Steve Noble (still a regular at conventions, now with 15 year old son in tow) had moved from Leicester to Bristol where there was one of only 2 or 3 comics shops in the country - Forever People.

From there he sent me The Panelologist, my first foray into comic geekdom. Our first comic convention wasn't until 1978 in Birmingham, and our first 'proper' one was Birmingham 1979. The rest, as they say, is etc.
