some of you may wish to know about what i think is a nice find on the net, i signed up to a newsletter on
http://www.cbgxtra.com and on the first one i received they let me download a free comics database on http://www.comicbase.com.
i have just looked at it and it has every american comic you wish to find already stored on it right up tp last months wolverine iss 51 but the really nice surprise it has uk comics & annuals on it as well. i just checked it has shiver and shake up to 83 ,wow -56 eagle vol 2 up to 505 and so on.I dont think it takes printers strikes into account though as it has whizzer & chips up to 1098 while i think there was only about 1093,buster up to 1937 though i thought someone said on here there was 2000 iss.but you can sort that out yourself.
i think this is an excellent database and it says you can store 500 comics on it and there is opportunity to buy upgrade but from what i have seen of it it has everything you need on it allready.there is places to put notes such as last issue or merged with and boxes to tick whether you have that issue or not.the amercan stuff allready seems chocca with notes and such.
I think there may be a few of you gonna get it if you haven't allready as it will take all the time and energy of trying to build your own database.

I'm not even sure what it is. A list of comics and made up prices? I don't get it.
(Actually I won't "get it" in any sense of the term as they don't do a Mac version.)

as far as i can see it is a complete database of all english language comics but you can add new titles that aint covered in it.
it will give people a rough idea of how any issues and annuals were made of that title.i personally will probably just use the uk titles in the list and add my own notes and tick if i have that issue.
i only looked at it quick but you may even be able to delete certain fields you wont use.
yes the prices are crap but remember that is in dollars.

If the dates are right then it's a great resource. For some reason I always like to know that my Jinity dated 10th May 1980 is actually issue 214 (or whatever). I just hope the dates are properly researched from the actual comics and not just the first issue date +7 days, + 7 days etc, etc as they will include issues never publised due to skip week strikes etc.
I did check 'Cheeky' against my list and it looks ok. They list the later issues of Smash as being by Odhams however when they were published by IPC-Fleetway.
Other cool online databases include..
Comicspriceguide.com
Comics.org
Comicbookdb.com
I have contributed to all the above three at one time or another and am currently 'active' on comicspriceguide.com.

Comic base is also used to drive the Atomic Avenue buying and selling site. Can anyone confirm if the following dates are correct for the following titles taking into consideration strikes etc...

Well I can't download it anyway as they're not modern enough to do a Mac version.
As for price guides; completely useless in this age of eBay. Prices vary wildly these days. Whenever I see something backed by the Comics Price Guide (as this software is) I get suspicious.
Still, sounds like a nice database which is what most people will use it for hopefully.

I do not know much about macs but i just checked the comicbase forums and they had a question about macs in which a guy said his friend wanted comicbase but he only had a mac and the reply was
"Comicbase will run under Virtual PC or Parallels, which are both windows
emulator [rograms on the mac. ( I hear Parallels is the better product, but I don't have personal experience and can't give an actual endorsement.)
We also run comicbase on a mac mini with intel chip during convention shows using boot camp, which allows the computer to boot up as either a windows OS or a Mac OS,and iI haven't seen a significant difference between the performance under Boot camp versus PC.
It really depends on what kind of equipment your friend has ,and whether he wants to invest in an emulator programme or a computer ".

Thanks. The Macs with Intel chips are the latest versions. My machine is about 7 years old. No matter though as I doubt I'd use Comicbase anyway as I just use my Mac for work and for forums like this. I have several books which cover runs on comics, number of issues, cover images etc. Thanks again for your help though.

Atomic Avenue looks like a good resource
Lew, these books you speak of, did you buy them or are they your own creations?

Hi Earl, Just checked the numbering on 'Buster' and it is wrong, so I imagine it will be wrong on the others too. They haven't taken into account the weeks when a strike prevented publication. Can't see why they have Angel Nadal's name listed next to issue No1 either. His involvement in Buster began later.
Buster didn't run for anything like 2000 issues though despite its near forty year run for, as well as losing a number of issues to industrial action, it was also only published fortnightly in its final years.

Thanks Kashgar. That's a shame.

No, I mean things like the Photo Journal books that came out several years ago. Huge hardbacks showing covers of practically every American comic of the golden age. They also did two covering Marvel Comics from 1961 to the late 1980s.
Going back to Comicbase, a recent discussion on Dez Skinn's forum made me realize how other collectors have a detailed filing system for their comics, with spreadsheets or index cards. That's never bothered me. I just keep everything in mint condition if possible and pile 'em up in boxes. I've never had a database for anything. Life's too short IMHO.
