Tesco Fun 'n Games - Tesco's own comic

Post by Raven »

There's talk of product placement in UK comics in another thread; well, Tesco's own comic,Tesco Fun 'n Games, which launched in October 1969, featured The Happy Sunblest Family, Milky Bar Kid, Mr. Quorange, the Brooke Bond Chimps, Fab and Zoom, the Robertson's Golly and Captain Birdseye amongst others.

Does anyone have any more info on this obscure title - such as how long it lasted? Or any memories of it?

Here's a piccy of Tesco Founder Jack Cohen from 1969 with the comic in his hands.

Free Milky Bar with that first issue!

It was quite an ambitious idea for a supermarket chain, wasn't it? Good way of getting your kids to insist you shop at Tesco.

Not really expecting a response as it's so obscure, but I just thought I'd bump this up after four years - I have quite a few issues now! - as I'm still keen to find out when this title finished, and someone who's discovered Comics UK more recently just may have some recollections.

Could you scan in and post some of the covers and interiors?

I'm not one of life's scanner ins and posters, but you can see the cover of the first issue here:

and an image of issue 38 here:

Some more strips I've discovered include Albert and Sidney and The Kennomeat Men, Shreddie Boy, and The Weeny Walls Family.

It ran for at least 51 issues, and the content appears to have reasonably consistent.
