old annuals... garage/jumble sales

Post by rossmac »

Hi there,

I remember when I was a kid and living in Scotland that I would quite often spot and, if I could persuade my parents, buy old Dandy Annuals at Jumble Sales, Car boot Sales, Garage Sales, Fairs, Fetes etc. These days however I live in Australia and the chances of finding any old Dandy or Beano annuals is slim to none. I have seen the occasional Whizzer & Chips, Knockout and Sparky annuals to name a few, but never a Dandy or Beano (actually to be fair, I have seen one Beano).

So my question is- Is it still as easy to find old annuals in the UK as it was when I was young (ie: the 1980s) or is it much the same there as it is here? Has eBay robbed us of the joy of finding an old annual at a market or second hand bookshop? Or should I be moving back to the UK? :-)

I live in a remote part of Scotland, and I bought one annual at a second hand shop two weeks ago, but haven't seen one at a jumble sale for years. I'm glad you posted. Sometimes it seems like everyone else in the world lives next door to a comic shop or in the middle of a city with car boot sales every day.

I started my comic collection with annuals, way back when. Such memories! And only moved to comics when I realized they were cheaper (and better value - you got more on each page). Ah, happy memories of jumble sales... those were the days.

When I lived in Stockton, I discovered the dubious delights of the local flea market, and over a few years would come away from there with all sorts of old annuals at "steal" prices. Ah, those were the days...

Nowadays it's rare for old annuals to turn up on my local flea market, cest la vie...

I'm quite surprised at the amount of Dandy and Beano annuals(Mainly 90's and 2000's) that turn up in charity shops and car boot sales still I'm pleased to say, the only trouble is I seem to have all the ones I see. :|

Yesterday I saw to Cheeky annuals going for £2 in a second hand book shop.

In the mid 80's there was a second hand shop in Weymouth and they always had loads of Beano/Dandy 50's annuals for sale at around £2.00 each. I remember not being able to afford them then, but i wish i'd saved a bit and bought 'em. you just don't see them anymore. i suppose Ebay has got rid of the second hand market to a certain extent and everyone thinks they can make money on everything.

You still see heaps of "old" Beano and Dandy annuals in charity shops these days, it's just that "old" now was "new" when i was comic reading age. I prefer to collect adventure/war comics now and those can be harder to come by, though i'm hoping that Jet annual in Bury Oxfam is gonna come down from £9.99 (i mean really!) eventually. The same would be no more than £5.99 in the Lincoln branch and things that don't sell have a habit of being moved to the 50p "please read me!" box.

There is a car boot sale near me every Sunday i beleive. But i never stop and read the sign. ONE DAY i will go... got a few annuals there when i was young, including a 70's Beezer which i still laugh at every time i read it.

Its certainly pretty easy in Glasgow and the surrounding areas - the Barras market sell lot sof old UK Annuals (and some UK comics) - ok not jumble sales but still cheap- and there are 3 seperate stalls - one specialising in UK annuals- with 70s 80s annuals (some 40s 50s and 60s -although theyre priced a lot higher) everythig from Funny comics annulas, to Beano to Hurricane etc, just be prepared to get your hands dirty!. There is also a US back issue shop in Glasgow that has a few annuals spread around it (about 20 tops) and in the West End of the city there is a large Oxfam book shop (near Fopp) that sells lots of annuals (some at ridiculosu prices -WHAM 1968 Annual has been on sale for £12 for over a year - there is a regular car boot sale near Lanark that usually has annuals and UK / US comics from 80s pretty cheap - in fact almost every car boot sale and charity shop Ive been to in Glasgow/ Hamilton area has had UK annuals (most from the 80s though) although most know the ones that are worth a few bob !

Dundee has an amazing second hand bookshop quite near the railway station with loads of annuals. If I had had room and money, a lot of them would have come back to Belfast with me last November.

Hmm, if we're on to locations of good second hand bookshops (for the needs of "our kind" anyway!)...

LINCOLN:

Oxfam: "Roughly opposite" one of the main entrances to the indoor market, (incedentally a large bookstall is just inside this entrance, and occasionally has Commando/War Picture Library etc for 40p each) and Wilko's. The childrens section with Annuals is under the stairs. Antique books are just beyond the till).

Harlequinn Books: Right at the top of the steepest part of Steep Hill (don't bother with "Reader's Rest" halfway up). Opening times are sporadic (not Wednesdays, i recall), and the woman likes long lunch breaks. BUT when you do get in it's a huge treasure trove, though be prepared to dig. She is very helpful and friendly though and does actually seem to know where everything is. Roughly-defined "Children's" section (though that covers everything from 1860's editions of Tom Brown up to the 2008 Bratz annual) is to the right when you go in. They also do antique newspapers, maps and globes.

"The green shop", er, i forgot the name. When you have ascended Steep Hill there is a courtyard with the Cathedral to one side and Castle to the other, with a road straight ahead (past a white with black beams Tourist Info building that's equally unmissable). Carry on down this road and the shop is on the left, and is green. Or perhaps blue. Either way the huge selection of annuals is just inside the door. Oh and the door is stiff so you may think it's closed when it isn't.

CAMBRIDGE:

Only one i know of that's even worth mentioning. Head to the market place close to Lion Yard (now Grand Arcade). To the right of the town hall (there's usually a hot dog stall shaped like an old tram parked there) is a road that goes back towards the Grand Arcade car park. There's also a church on the right as you go down this road, with an alley to the right of it. Go down this alley, ignore the other bookshop there (nothin' doin. Academic and really antique books are thier trade) and turn left, then right again. Now you'll see a tiny red shop with some boxes outside, that's the one. It's super-packed and three people will crowd it. The Children's section is upstairs, you have to ask to go up as the stairs are rather treacherous. Then start digging! They have lots of Girl's books if that's your thing, plus HEAPS of W. Howard Baker storypaper reprints ( :notworthy: ) on a shelf near the window and a green door. However last time i went the shelf was on a rather alarming lean and creaking... so you may find them in a heap amongst spintered wood instead.

BURY ST EDMONDS

I travel there on the bus, so will run from there.
Where the buses stop, there is a war memorial, "the first illuminated road sign in Britain" (it's rather ornate), and a big theatre or something called Athaenium. With the gardens on the left and the town on the right, walk past these and up to where a (closed) cathedral tower is opposite a road. Go up this road and some distance up it is a white shop on the left. However there's none too much of interest to us, unless you like Rupert. Give it a try though.

LINCOLN
I don't know how far back your knowledge of Lincoln goes felneymike, but I have very fond memories of Lincoln Books. The shop was a fair way out of town, quite near Sincil Bank football ground but on High Street, the main road in to the Stonebow and Steep Hill. It closed in the late Nineties but was an absolute treasure trove of cheap and constantly-renewed children's comics, annuals and books. I remember buying a couple of hundred wartime issues of The Hotspur and The Wizard there in about 1997 for not much more than £1 each. They would obviously be a lot more now but I genuinely believe that the city was lessened when that shop closed. The shops that you mention are, in my opinion, simply not in the same league.

Ah, my knowledge of the city stretches all the way back to September 2006, so i missed it.

Apparently there is some bookshop under a crumbling railway arch in Cambridge, down a load of back-roads, which stocks old comics. But i havent had a chance to investigate yet.

If we're looking for shops to find old comics, then there is a nice little shop in Swindon Old Town. If travelling to Swindon from J16 of the M4 and head towards the town centre. After taking the right at Matalan, follow the road into Swindon and at the first sign, take the right to travel into the Old Town. About 1/2 mile in, you will see a curio shop that sells everything from cigarette cards to comics. I found a No 1 Wizard from 1970 in there along with a few other belters. And the annuals he has for sale is a good collection.

There are also 3 good markets/car boot sales close to Swindon as well. Blundson market, Bradenstoke car boot and the little Asda usually has a good car boot as well.

Area 51 in Bristol is great for picking up old 2000ADs, but unless you are into American comics, there is little else that interests us.

Talking of Dundee, travel along the Perth Road and find Gordon's books, a lovely little second-hand book dealer. You can sometimes find some gems in there. At the bottom of the Perth Road is the Westport and there used to be a few shops there that sold lots of old comics. And of course, no comic hunting journey in Dundee would be complete without a visit to Dens Road Market.

As you can tell, I have travelled around a fair bit and I am always watching out for shops that might or might not have the odd comic for sale!
I started to say something sensible but my parents took over my brain!
