An Oxfam near me had a HUGE selection of comics and annuals donated, so on Saturday I got:
An issue of Spike (20-something). They were 99p each, going to wait and see if a bulk deal is offered, but if not, at least I have one!
The 1964 (dated 1963) Z Cars annual
The 1967 Hotspur Annual
There was loads more, but I'm trying to save money. There was a shelving unit on wheels stuffed with various football annuals from the 1950's - 2000's.

Also got two of the latest Commando's (the others had sold out, but will be bound to show up sometime) and The Phoneix.

On my last trip to Japan, I got the first book of something called Sherdock, about a dog that think's it's Sherlock Holmes. This has now been released in English as Sherlock Bones! I was trying to translate my way through the Japanese one, now I have a guide!

I had a fantastic trip to my favourite book shop today. I got:

20 issues of Wow from #27 - #55 (including #30 - the Christmas issue)

School Fun #7 and #10, and the 1984 Holiday Special

issue #500 of Whoopee

There were more comics but I had to limit myself! They'll still be there when I go back next time though as I'm the only person who buys the comics there.

Any special celebrations, gift or pullout in the pages to celebrate it reaching 500 issues?

There is a pull-out Guy Fawkes mask on the centre pages, but that's because this issue came out at the same time the fireworks issue would. Also, there is a competition to win 500 prizes to celebrate the 500th issue!

And finally, on the letters page is the answer to the "Whoopee 500-Clue Crossword" which had appeared over the previous four issues of Whoopee, obviously building up to this landmark issue.

Overall it isn't very special. I think they missed an oppourtunity of having a fantastic cover here, but they wasted it. When #1000 of The Beano came out the cover illustration was fantastic, but the #1000 landmark wasn't celebrated even slightly inside.

You can be find a scan of the cover of the 500th Whoopee in the gallery section on this site.

I ventured to Leeds on Sat & its comic fair - I bought 3 1967 copies of Wham! plus a Best Of Beezer - all for just 2 quid.

Wow, I hadn't realised just how great Wham! was. Baxendale really in his element.

Leo wasn't drawing much, if anything, for Wham! by 1967. Most of the strips by then were by other artists imitating his style to various degrees, such as Mike Lacey on The Tiddlers.

Leo tended to sign his pages for Odhams, so unless they have his distinctive signature they're unlikely to be by him I'm afraid.

As an aside, I've just read something else online that stated Leo Baxendale drew 'The Dolls of St.Dominics' and 'The Group' for Pow! (Which were drawn by Ron Spencer and Mike Brown respectively.) Amazing how the myths persist after all these years, although it's an easy mistake to make when artists 'ghost' the style of another. That said, Pow! was still a great comic and well worth collecting, as are all the 'Power Comics'.

I bought a copy of Wham No. 73 (1965) recently with the Odhams notes on who should be paid what for the work of preparing the strips - Baxandale only did the Tiddlers, 2 pages out of 20. It's all good stuff though!!

...bought a copy of Swift No. 2 from 1954 at the Comic Mart in London today, and a couple of Super Fleetway Library Steel Claw comics from the sixties...

The Fleetway libraries are great reading.

Here are some recent purchases I made:

Beano

50th issue with poster (already had this, but without poster)

30/10/1999
1/1/2000
12/8/2000
26/8/2000
28/10/2000
23/12/2000

Once they have all arrived, I will now have completed the year 2000 (which I was surprised I didn't have all of already).

Summer Specials

Beano: 1999,2000
Bash Street Kids: 2000,2001
Beezer: 1973 (First One)

I'm sure I already have those Beano Summer Specials, but they came together with some comics of the ones I needed. I can't find them but, I'll probably end up finding the other copies now I've got them!

Yesterday I went to the big comic fair at the Royal National Hotel in Bloomsbury. It was disappointing in two respects. First, there wasn't even one single stand which specialised in British comics and story papers. All the rooms were full of dealers selling either American comics and associated merchandise, or selling DVDs, sometimes both on the same stall. One guy had a box of 2000ADs, which don't interest me, but that was about it. All I managed to buy were two Girls' Crystal annuals (1957 and 1959), and four School Friend annuals (1955, 1956, 1957 and 1960), all six in very good condition. Secondly, yet again stevezodiac failed to make himself known to me! The only saving grace was the fact that the forecast torrential rain didn't materialise. In fact there was none at all, a match, or compensation, for the total lack of issues of The Wizard, The Rover, Adventure, The Hotspur, The Skipper etc.

Phoenix - you were unlucky because the one or two people who sell British comics weren't there yesterday, sadly. It's the only time I haven't seen them and I go regularly. But next time will be the 'ABC Show' when a couple of British comics dealers come and set up with substantial runs of various DCT and IPC and Marvel UK titles plus lots of annuals. They always seem to have something good. It encourages the American comic dealers to bring in a few British items too. Hopefully the gentlemen selling British comics who are regulars will also be back.

Was looking out for you but nobody seemed to match your description and I was hoping I would see someone looking for me. I was sad not to have met you. I only picked up some dvds. The four and a half hour cut of John Woo's Red Cliff (I already have the shorter version) and a film I have been seeking for over 30 years - Closed Cicuit - a 1978 Italian film which I saw on bbc 2 around 1978/79 and have been looking for ever since. Also got a nice thick book about The Little Rascals (Our Gang) which lists every film with full credits - great reference piece.

All right, Steve, let's try again at the ABC Fair on December 1st, only this time I think we should agree on a specific time, and a meeting place, even if it's a nearby pub. There were a lot of people there on Sunday I will admit, but I was wearing a blue shirt and blue jeans, and my cream summer jacket with the sleeves rolled up as I said I would. I did from time to time look round for a couple of guys together, as I think you said you would be with your mate Steve, but as I have no idea what you look like, it did make more sense for you to approach me. I wasn't annoyed by the way, just disappointed, as I said in my earlier post. I still enjoyed my long weekend in Putney.

Me and Steve don't go around the fair together - he is busy buying better copies of sixties Marvels and increasing his collection of Romance comics. I get bored after about twenty minutes as I have practically stopped buying comics nowadays - unless I come across something special. I look out for american dvd sets of old tv shows mainly. I was a bit taken aback as they have refurbished the place and laid a plush carpet which made me think I was in a parallel world. The rooms were all a different shape and a bit confusing. I noticed from the flyers that there are two marts at Bloomsbury just a fortnight apart.
