Adam Eterno wrote:I've bought quite a few since my last post on this section but today, as mentioned on another thread, the very nice Postie delivered a bound volume of the complete run of 19 comics of The Glasgow Looking Glass which became the Northern Looking Glass and includes the two "New Series" editions produced later in 1826. Their condition is remarkable.

Arguably the first comic ever as it was the first to use speech balloons and the phrase "continued next issue" apparently. Malcom Phillips wasn't sure if there were any issues in private hands still but the seller has had the set in her family since her Grandfather bought them some one hundred years ago. She also sent me a couple of newspaper articles from 100 years ago discussing the comics! I haven't read the articles in detail yet but I'm really looking forward to them as much as the Looking Glass itself.

193 years old........I'm very very happy with my purchase and my profound thanks go to Forum member Hawkeye who pointed me towards them.
I should have posted earlier but the first reaction was to get on the phone to Mr Eterno and to chew his ear off on how, who, where, when and what.

To put this purchase into perspective, this is one of only six, make that now seven sets known to exist.

John McShane is quite excited about it especially about the Glasgow Herald article as he has not seen that before or more accurately, he can't remember seeing it before!

Folks, this is truly historic. This is like finding the original art and scripts for the six missing Actions or the original art and script for the other Action comic featuring a certain spandex clad gentleman. You're a jammy sod, but well done that man for not only finding them but putting your hand in your pocket to make sure they have gone to a good home. Now while Adam pores over his latest precious, I am off to do a condition check on the latest additions to my picture libraries collections!
Cheers Col. I've been looking at the newspaper clippings that came with it and they are from the Glasgow Herald in 1923. I've photographed the respone letter which I think was from the original owner of my volume. I'll photograph the original letter, which is quite long, over the weekend and email them to you. It's funny to think that the comics were 90 odd years old when these letters were being written.....90 odd years ago!

I've just extracted my collection of ACTION from a cupboard. It consists of a complete run from issue 1 (14 February 1976) to the unnumbered issue for (16 October 1976), a total of 36 issues.

As it looks as though Col is not able or willing to answer my question, could any other member who knows the answer please answer it instead, and also tell me how many issues there were altogether. Just because well over 90% of my collection was produced by Thomsons, it doesn't mean that I have no interest in those story papers produced by other companies. Thank you in anticipation.

Colin didn't answer as he had not seen the message. Plus me crystal ball is on the fritz!

The original run of Action ran from issue 1 (cover dated 14 February 1976) to issue 37 (cover dated 23 October 1976). Issue 37 was pulled by senior editor John Sanders and ordered to be immediately pulped. As a result, some far sighted individuals who had received an advance copy cleverly decided to keep quiet about it. Thanks to them, there are about 30 copies of the "banned" issue in existence and it is the third most valuable British comic.

You are also missing the post-recall run which restarted with issue 38 (cover dated 4 December 1976) up to issue 87 (cover dated 12 November 1977) which was a lobotomised version of its' former self.
I started to say something sensible but my parents took over my brain!

I have 86 of the 87 issues........not suprisingly missing #37 although I know at least 1 Forum member has that elusive issue. That 6 week gap was a killer!

Wizard 1004 8/8/1942
Adventure 1138 28/7/1945

THE WIZARD 1004 (8/8/1942)
From the point of view of the story content, it is a good issue to have, given that it contains a Lionheart Logan tale, the final instalment of The Man Who Blacked Out The Moon, the penultimate instalment of series 2 of Catamount Jack, the opening instalment of the first series of V For Vengeance, and an episode from Our Headmaster's A Third Former.

ADVENTURE 1138 (28/7/1945)
This excellent issue has the first instalment of The Tank With The Purple Heart, an instalment of the cricket serial Stonewall The Stumper, an episode of a war story They'll Try It Again!, an instalment from the rather strange Sci-Fi serial Bull Raiders From The Red Orb, and one from The Brand Of The Hammer, a serial that would appear again, albeit in pictorial form, on the cover of ADVENTURE between 1435(July 19 1952) and 1446 (October 4 1952).

Monster Monthly #1 - Marvel - 1982

Strange that I'd never heard of that one given the date and that I had the full House/Halls of Hammer/Horror. Just must have slipped by me.

It's funny that you say that as I'd never heard of it until I saw a chart of all Marvel UK comics in the 70s and 80s last month and it was on there. Only 8 issues so easily missed I suppose.

Back in December I came across someone selling batches of comics at very reasonable prices and have been carrying bags of them away at regular intervals. Among them were a couple of hundred Shoots and Goals and a run of Striker.

Here is a list of my acquisitions:

Lion 1-4, 18-46, 48-63, 116-119.
Tiger 1-49 including free gifts for 2, 29 and 30.
TV Fun 1-14, 16-56.
Knockout 751-786 (1953-54)
Film Fun 1672-1736, 1789-1832.
Radio Fun 659, 660, 686-771, 848-854.
Rover 1493-1515, 1525-1539, 1552, 1554, 1565, 1567-1575, 1581-1612 free gift tin pocket puzzler with 1597 and free cricketer photos with issues 1607-1612.
Hotspur 902
Wizard 1461
Champion 1485, 1486, 1557, 1671-1729
Adventure 1516-1562, 1574-1576, 1617-1635 issues 1517, 1518, 1550, 1551, 1630-1635 have their free gifts.
Jingles 597-624.
Striker 1-6, 8-25, 30-35.

They came in bundles of about £35-£45 each so good value. He had some Eagles but I passed them up as have never been a fan.

And there were about 200 football magazines from early seventies.

I forgot to mention a free gift Glider in one of the TV Funs.

Wow! What a brilliant haul. These three lots alone are worth substantially more than you paid for them. Well done! I've been after Tiger #1 for ages and with those free gifts, that's a fantastic result.

I just saw a box of early Tigers with a £45 price tag on top. It wasn't until I got home that I realised it was the first 49 issues. Apart from staple rust they are in excellent condition. He has the complete volume two of Eagle for £85.

That kind of haul only happens rarely but when it does, it's sooooooo good! The Tiger #1 alone is worth more than you paid for the lot. The #2 with gift probably a lot more. You can read a year's worth of the first Tigers as well which is brilliant. Who knows what you may find in the other comics!? If you ever want to part with that Tiger #1, please give me a shout first!
