I saw a volume of Chums at a market the other day - from the Thirties, I think. The period illustrations were quite likeable (rather 1930s Beano adventure style), and it was very profusely illustrated. Packed with ripping yarns, too.

Chums was created in the vein of The Boys Own rather than the slightly later Amalgamated Press publicastions, so yes! The first volume features the serialisation of The Iron Pirate by Max Pemberton (who was also the first editor and who wrote for "proper magazines" like The Windsor!).
It seems to me that the earlier volumes were more "traditional" than the later ones, and that serials were more "high minded" than the shorter stories. Mind you Harry Blyth did write a serial in 1898, he did invent Sexton Blake but was a pretty bad hack! I've been meaning to look into that serial on my blog actually.
One 30's serial i do want to read is "The Red Pirate" which looks quite anti-communist, in the wake of the Russian Revolution and all. I go for that sort of thing.

Well done there! I got two 1960s "Beezers" at my local market (W,Ton) one from 1965 the other 1969. Both 50p each! Pretty good condition for A3 papers-but rather `musty`

What was the date on the 1965 issue, Alan?

The reason I asked, is because I am on the hunt for comics from 1965 around my birthday (around February)

It's issue #1700. It does seem to be a new look, that red square behind the logo is new and the AD in the logo has changed typeface.

I struck a bit of gold as far as the Birthday week for me was concerned, as I recently picked up an issue of The Beezer from 27/2/65 (so this issue would have been released during the week of 15/2/65 and 20/2/65, which is the timeframe I'm looking for, as they usually date the comics for a week after release.)

Now to locate issues of Sparky, The Dandy, The Beano and Buster (but I have a feeling it will take me a while to locate them).

Crikey! 16, bought online this time, had arrived by the time I got home from my holiday. I've been losing patience with Worlds Apart's individualistic delivery schedules for some time now. So, just to be on the safe side.....

Well! Crikey 16 is the last one. So that's one less to worry about!
