YeahI have to admit is is one of my favourite threads at the moment , its nice to see all the comic covers - keep 'em coming please.

One question to EARL : I was wondering why you have decided to collect DC comics "pence" editions specifically - no reason, I was just wondering as most folk/collectors prefer cents copies (like you I pick up pence copies as normally they are cheaper).

Good question.

When I was a 'wee boy' I never even realised there was more than one version of the US comics. For some reason it never dawned on me that the American comics would not have pence prices on them. Typical I suppose when you were 10, 11 or 12!

When the internet kicked into gear I noticed that some collectors shunned the UK priced versions. I looked through my collection and noticed my bronze aged issues had a mix of US and UK versions.

I did some research and found that whilst there were a few thousand Marvel US comics with UK priced variants there were only 500 to 600 DC's ever printed with UK prices on them as the T&P stamps had lasted much longer on DC's than Marvel's.

With a few exceptions DC's were only PRINTED with ONLY UK prices from 1978 to 1981 which co-insides with my favourite childhood period. Not all DC's were distributed in the UK so getting a full set of them seemed achievable as I already had a nice proportion of them from my childhood.

So I started to collect both the US and UK priced versions of comics from 1978 to 1981. This period followed the 'DC implosion' so not many titles were published in this period. DC also did a deal with US publisher Whitman around this time and less than 200 'Whitman Logo' variants of DC Comics were published in this period.

I know it?s all a bit anal retentive but it?s been an interesting piece of research into the three different editions DC published during this period. I think I have about 90% of the US priced DC?s from 1978 to 1981, about 20% of the Whitman Logo variants and about 80% of the Pence priced variants. The War books are proving to be the hardest to find followed by the Westerns. The Mystery and Superhero books are fairly easy apart from Super Friends.

Earl,
that makes perfect sense to me. As I only collect UK adventure papers, I find that the cent sign is guaranteed to ensure that comic X is a comic that I will not buy!

It still amazes me that some of our UK comics can turned up in the most unusual places.

Keep the scans coming. I may be jealous that you have bought something that I want, but I will never be so jealous that I will avoid a scan!
I started to say something sensible but my parents took over my brain!
