My alternate perception is that comicsgalore is presenting a very convincing case to be as appreciated by forum members as yanobandy was. My mummy, if she were still alive, would almost certainly be troubled by his lack of knowledge about where exactly to use capital letters, and my daddy, if he were still with us, would apply his critical eye to the posts themselves, and dismiss the bulk of them as tripe, and he wouldn't have been referring to what my mummy had put on the table for his tea.

 No need for that. Also, that quote is two years old. There's absolutely no need to respond to it. Besides, my point was valid. Not that it matters now, since like I said, the website we were referring to is GONE.

And 'yehilovethedandy' on our Dandy forum as well as 'beanowed' on the Beano forum.

I'm completely with you, Mike D and Tin Can.

Comics galore continually makes short posts, some of which are fine, but others are irrelevant, others dredge up ancient threads for no good reason (in my opinion it's fine to bring up old threads if you've got something fresh to contribute that fits in with the original topic, otherwise start a new thread) and in some cases being rude to other members, for example the way he calls Wizzkid97 a 'nincompoop'.

Funnily enough, these features are shared by yanobandy's posts, and the overall style and tone of their posts is very similar. Coincidence? Hmmm...

And yanobandy stopped posting when comicsgalore appeared. Yeah, I smell a sockpuppet. Admins, do their IP addresses match?

Not even by a country mile. Minimum geographical separation of 50 plus miles. And that check had already been carried out as it is now a self-imposed task to ensure that "random" email addresses do not create accounts from IPs that have already hosted problem children.

I suppose I'm wasting my time pointing out that there should be a gap after every comma. Oh, and there should be another u in vacuous.

You are for the next week as our scatter-brained friend has been shown the door for that length of time. Plus his comment would have been much improved if it had been alliterative.

Now we bring you back to your scheduled programming.... :coat:

From my rereading of the Forum Rules (Revised Version) it seems clear that there is no such sanction as one week. After two warnings they are out for a month. Nowhere does it say or imply that one or other of the warnings will lead to the sidelining of a naughty poster for a week. Consistency please.

Tharg is merciful and benevolent from time to time if he considers that the thrillsuckers can learn to stop sucking thrills.

Tharg is anything but merciful and benevolent if he encounters the Dictators of Zrag.

We are not Tharg (although Al might secretly be), but that was my thinking when we put all the normallys and usuallys in the paragraph about sanctions - to give us discretion to let an idiot stop being an idiot, but also to shortcircuit people who obviously will not learn whatever we do.

My concern is that some of the new members are mistaking this for a chat forum. We all know it isn't - it's a place where we can share our little bit of knowledge, learn from others, and discuss maturely (including some, or even a lot, of punditry.) Informed comment.

It almost makes you yearn for the days of the internet spammers... but not actually.

The spammers were merely irritating, Andy. After all, they were simply drawing our attention briefly to their sales listings of electronic gizmos, patent medicines, cleaning utensils, pornographic DVDs etc. Trolls, on the other hand, are corrosive, and create an atmosphere of unpleasantness, confrontation and distrust. Some good people have left the forum as a consequence, although steelclaw and Lew Stringer, for example, do pop back occasionally. I'm not sure about Spencer, though. He was really upset.

These trolls successfully give the impression that they are comics enthusiasts, which creates situations in which the genuine enthusiasts repeatedly take their eye off the ball and respond to them. They love this because it allows them to worm their way in. They are then in a position to rubbish comics and forum members alike, more or less with impunity. I can empathise with the administrators because they don't want to give everybody the impression that they are heavy-handed, and anyway they want to give all posters every latitude. But how far is far enough? It will be interesting to assess comicsgalore's attitude in a week or so's time. My best bet is that he will get to 100 posts within a day or two and then disappear, by which time his replacement will already be a forum member and will be ready to strike.

I wouldnt really trust Ip checks because on some ISPs IP adresses may change alot. mine use to say I lived somewhere (which i will call Place A) and then my IP Adress would change (for no discernable reason but it may have been cos i turned the internet off and one) and i my Ip adress would say i lived somewhere completely different and often miles away from place A. Also comicsgalore said in a post somewhere he is from Edinburgh and Yanobandy has said the same or he has revealed his real name and said he was from Edinburgh.

A lot of us have ISPs with dynamic IPs that change every time we reboot our routers, but they're usually fairly accurate geographically. Having said that, I often get adverts targeted at folks from Leeds which is over 50 miles from where I live, so there must be some room for error...
