Winter/Christmas Special? Help with a date.

In the Specials Section is this 'Shoot London Football Special, With this note from Al.

If you know the correct year of this Special, please let me know via the contacts page - Al.

I have this Special in my hands now, there is no dates anywhere of when it was published,but there are clues with matches being played in January 1970 which haven't been played yet, it doesn't mention 1970 anywhere and all the statistics got up to the end of 1969.

Now would this special have been published in 1969 as like a christmas Holiday special? or published in January 1970?
Would it have been published in 1969 for 1970.
Just Curious really as I don't know much about dates they would have been published,but if the dates of comics were published a weeks in advance would this have been the same?

My own guess would be December 1969 as it covers all the statistics up to the end of the 1968/69 season, but speaks of the Spurs vs Southampton match on 31 Jan 1970 as being "forthcoming" implying that the match has yet to be played. (Southampton won 1-0 if you're interested). If anyone has a better guess or knows, then I'll be happy to be put in my place!

Or it could be 1969/70 published in 1969 but in the shops the first week of January er I guess that would still be 1969.

Are you sure there's no copyright date in the mag? Most unlike IPC if this is so.

Anyway, it was published in December 1969. There's a half page ad for it in the Christmas issue of Smash! from that year.

Forget about pigeonholing it as a Winter or Christmas special. It was, as the cover states, a London Football Special. A category of its own. Simple as that.

I think this is one of a series released at the same time as I have a Northern Teams edition.

It was even more specialised than I remember-Lancashire Football Special.

THis sort of implies that there were others-Yorkshire(I could not see one ,without the other),Midlands etc

Just flicking through I would say it is late 69 early 70-as Liverpool are talking about looking forward to the 70's and a joke about the upcoming World Cup.

I will date this Shoot spin-off January 1970, because the first scan that you listed states In Town THIS Month and then mentions that Southampton will play Tottenham on January 31st.

So, even though it may have physically been printed in December 1969, I believe that if IPC would have placed a date on it, like they do for their annuals,it would have been January 1970.

The first issue of Shoot was published in August 1969 so that Special must already have been on the drawing board which showed a lot of confidence in a new magazine. The London Evening Standard published 12 specials around that time - one for each London club. I have them all except the first one which was for Chelsea (who have just beaten Arsenal 0-3 tee hee). I have a nice collection of Shoot as I loved the late 60s early 70s era of British football. You could name whole sides without getting tongue tied eg: Hollins, Hinton, Harris, Houseman, Hutchins...or Charlton, Cooper, Reaney, Madely, Giles, Clarke, Lorimer, Bremner. Nowadays I get as far as Papa howsyerfather Diouf and give up. Arsenal fans should get their dignity back and create FC Arsenal and start again with all British players.

I have to say I like the fact that other teams are treated with respect regardless of what league they were in.Rather than just making up the numbers.

However in the Lancs Mag that I scanned Bill Shankly is already making a case for the Premier League - far-sighted man that

Which ones? Shoot or Evening Standard specials? Those are tabloid and will need scanning in two halves.
