I was wondering earlier about the various reader polls there have been in the Beano and Dandy over the past couple of decades. I'm not referring to the polls which ask the comic's readers to vote for their favourites and least favourites, but the Beano's Comic Idol and Dandy's Strictly Come Laughing competitions. My question is, which strip or character did you want to win in each competiton?

Taking the Beano's Comic Idol contests as an example, in the 2004 competition I voted for Colin the Vet (he came runner up but still got into the comic - I'm so glad my vote counted ). In 2005, I thought Hugh Dunnit was the best of the three, but mainly because I didn't like the other two, Christmas Carole or Zap Zodiac. The following year I wasn't really keen on any of Scammin' Sam, Mia Starr or Nicky Nutjob, but in the 2010 vote, while I was happy that Meebo and Zuky won, I'd have been reasonably happy if Uh Oh, Si Co or Home Invasion had come out victorious.

In the Dandy's Strictly Come Laughing contest earlier this year, if I'd have voted it would most likely have been for Harry and his Hippo, with Daredevil Dad second (I didn't like the look of Tag TeamTastic or Phil's Finger).

That's exactly how SCL turned out, so you would've been voting with the majority. Hippo won (and was my favourite - Fanton has a nice style, and it's an update of an old classic), Daredevil Dad came second (and actually overtook Hippo after the votes had been counted), Tag Team Tastic was third, and Phil's Finger (another unoriginal idea, being similar to Richard's Snitch from 20 years ago) a very distant last. And yet they still recycled that idea as Cheryl's Mole, which fooled nobody - it was even by the same artist.

I voted for Hippo in the last strictly come laughing poll. I wasn't reading the Dandy (except for the relaunch issue) at the time the first poll came out, and sadly didn't vote. But if I did it would have been a toss up between George Vs. Dragon and Postman Prat.

Daredevil Dad was a good strip though, the bits where he got into trouble with his neighbour was hilarious! I like harry and his hippo though.

You could have voted for 5 diffrent strips.

Um, Strictly was 4 strips, the original vote was 7. Dunno where you got 5 from.
