I have never come across the word 'conkers' in this context, Steve. If it is a rhyming slang word, what word rhymes with it? If not, what is its etymology?

And yet at roughly £1 per issue, SID, the price couldn't have been much more attractive. I have most if not all of those issues, but if I hadn't got them and didn't have enough readies, I would have gone straight to my bank for a short-term loan. If they had turned my application down, I would have got over my disappointment in due course.
Oh they are definitely a good price, Phoenix. The trouble is that Victor was never a favourite of mine even though I did subscribe to it for a few years after it had absorbed Hotspur.

Now if they were Hotspurs then that would be a different story. :)

It was a word my late brother used and I have since heard it on TV, probably in Only Fools or Minder. A drinking mate always used the word rhino for money. I'll have a look online to see the origins.

Someone says the word was used in Steptoe and Son. No explanation to be found save that it comes from Victorian times.

I've heard conkers used many times in regards to cash but I'm also unsure where it came from. I also lived in South East London for a decade so it could be local.

A tad too much for the later years of Victor. I sold the full year of 1974 this morning for £60 but that's a lot earlier than 1988. I still have almost 200 Victors from 1968, 1973, 1980 & 1981 which my beloved is keen for me to dispatch as I don't collect them!

And, in my opinion, quite a lot less than they are worth.

Sadly, Victor has never been a comic that has commanded the prices seen by some of it's peers. A full year, post 1970, has only sold once for more than £60 in the last 4 years. Indeed, someone was trying to sell the 416 issues prior to 1970, therefore of a supposed higher value, for £600 earlier in the year and was unsuccessful.

I'd be tempted to collect them due to their relative cheapness if there weren't so many that I'd never manage to read them all!

Money being referred to as 'conkers' does have a London origin but, for once, the origin is not derived from rhyming slang as is usually the case. It's origins refer to the high value inner city kids placed on actual conkers. Given that they rarely saw a horse chestnut tree a pocketful of humble conkers could have had a considerable barter value with other conker deprived kids. The phrase 'sufficient conkers' is certainly used in Steptoe and Son as is Harold's lament on the lack of local greenery when he was a boy 'I didn't see a real tree till I was twelve!'

On the subject of the Victor I didn't buy some on Saturday. Peter in the flea market had four or five of the later glossy issues but they were a bit too worn to be purchased. It's funny but I preferred those later glossy issues. I did buy a Coronation issue of Blighty magazine with a nice full colour Arthur Ferrier illustration in the centre. Well worth the 50p.

Getting back to Steptoe and Son. Galton and Simpson really knew their London slang. It's the only place I've heard the word "cowson" apart from from my dad's lips. It's pronounced cow's son.

Now that's really South London. My neighbour called me it when I taught his 3 year old son to yell Eaaaaglesss whenever he saw me. My mate was a Millwall fan..... I deserved the insult!

My local Oxfam has a huge amount of the judge dredd hardback partworks, I was thinking about getting them as they're less than a third of the new price, can anyone tell me if the cursed earth one has the 'banned' issues in it? I know they've been reprinted now so should be included but I wanted to be sure. I didn't have chance to check it in the shop as they were shutting. If so I'll go back first thing tomorrow.

If the word "Uncensored" is part of the title, then it does have the two 'banned' episodes since it 's a fairly recent printing. If it is not, then it 's an older collection without them. You can see that recent cover here...

i bought the uncensored book even though i have all but 1 of the judge dredd case files but i know the banned episodes isn't in those ,i've yet to read any of the case files books though. i'm sure the hardback collection would have explained on the inside notes.
