Does anyone know when and which comic this strip, which was reprinted in the early 2000AD and Starlord annuals, originally appeared? Some people have said 'Eagle' (late 60s) but I had annuals from that period and no strips appeared in those...

Was this strip ever titled "Ghost Patrol" if so I think it appeared in "WHAM" or "SMASH" at some point - was it about a lost group of Roman soldiers - If so let me know I have a book on the Power comics and it gives where these strips originally appeared (as I'm sure it was a reprint in Wham

Actually it was in SMASH! and ran for about 25 issues from No.1, reprinted from "Phantom Patrol". Now does anyone remember being scared silly by Brian Lewis's "Moon Madness" in SMASH? And I DO mean SILLY!

No - 'The Phantom Patrol' was about a WW2 army troop who discover a strange device that turns out to be a time machine. They become lost in time, getting involved in various historic conflicts but also occasionally ending up in the future. I suppose you might describe it 'Stargate SG1' meets 'The Time Tunnel'... So is this definitely from 'Smash'?

Just to add my little bit of knowledge. The art was by Gerry Embleton.

Yes, it's the same strip, just retitled. Wasn't it originally in SWIFT comic ( a kind of junior EAGLE) in about 1959, another Hulton/Odhams title. I've got at least one example of the corresponding strip in both comics, the only difference is the name and the cheap print of SMASH makes a bit of a mess of Ron Embleton's line, which looks great in the SWIFT.

Spud - Just found my book on ODHAMS comics and your sopt on "Phantom Patrol" was originally published in "SWIFT" from 3 Feb 1962 - 28 May 1966 - Reprinted as "GHOST PATROL" in "SMASH" issues 1 - 26 with art by the legendry Ron Embleton.

Just to push a point here. I've only ever seen the reprints in the 2000AD annual(s). But I'm pretty sure it was Ron Embleton's brother, Gerry who drew the strip. Can anyone confirm this?

Jim - I think your correct on this one - On havign a look at the strips I have again, it looks like Gerry's work to me and not Rons.

Yes, slip of the keypad, I meant Gerry, of course. While I'm on, anyone know if The Legend Testers from SMASH (that really WAS like the Time Tunnel, but no Lee Merriwether, shame) was a reprint or new?

SPUD - Theres no mention of it being printed previously in my ODHAMS book so looks like it was all original stuff- It ran from issues 9 - 75,(April 1966- July 1967) containing 7 story arcs . Art was by Jorge Bernet with scripts by Graham Baker. Your right a lot of similarities to Time Tunnel
