Foreign editions of UK comics/strips

Post by Shaqui »

I was wondering if anyone here had come across any unusual foreign editions or reprints of UK comics or strips, and when this practice started - especially foreign language versions. I know 2000AD had a Spanish counterpart called Dan Dare and included things like 'The Harlem Heroes'. Going further back, some strips from Look-In (Space:1999 and Kung Fu to name but two) were reprinted in the Portuguese TV Junior. Italy cribbed 'UFO' and 'The Persuaders' for Qui Giovani, and Holland had its own version of TV Century 21 crossed with Lady Penelope called TV2000.

Eagle had several different overseas versions I gather, but does D.C. Thomson have foreign editions? Any others of note or interest?

Well for Eagle there was...
Hauk - the Norwegian version of Eagle
Arend - the Dutch version
The Australian Eagle
Falken - can't remember this one, maybe the Swedish or Finnish version
Il Giono Dei Ragazzi - Italian Eagle

Dan Dare stories were also reprinted in
Foguetao - Portugal
L'Avventuroso - Italy
Panorama - Yugoslavia
Dan Dair - France

2000AD reprints of Dan Dare strip in
Dan Dare - Spanish
Eks - Yugoslavia

New Eagle strips have also been reprinted overseas but I have less info. on this, but click here (on hte John M. Burns link) for a foreign reprint of the 'Fists of Danny Pyke' strip

And I'm sure there are more than that!

There were some Australian reprints of D.C. Thomson's Red Dagger comics.

Some of Star Trek strips form TV21 were reprinted in the weekend edition of 'The Australian" newspaper many years ago when they had a comic section.

Disney were syndicated everywhere I think... I have some Italian ones somewhere, and i'm sure i've seen Arabic versions.

Talking of Arabia, I recall reading the newspaper James Bond and Jeff Hawke strips in the Khaleej Times in Dubai, United Arab Emirates in the 1980s. These were English language though.

Interesting they were the TV21 versions and not, say, serialised versions of the Gold Key editions. I've heard rumour Australia also reprinted some of the Supercar strips from TV Comic, possibly in a TV related magazine, but I've never had that confirmed...

Shaqui - Sorry I can not help you regarding Supercar but the Star Trek strips that I recall were by Mike Noble.

The "Janus Stark" strip is pretty popular in some countries and there have been several foreign Editions collecting his adventures in France (see link) as well as Eastern Europe - I also saw a comic in Spainsh language comic featuring "Mytek the Mighty" and "Cursotor Doom " when on holiday years ago
