Cuddles and Dimples Mum has appeared in naughty ways...by Barrie and Nigel..
the Dandy annual with her jumping out of the bath is certainly remembered...

I'm not sure if it's inappropriate but Ivor Lott had a posh cousin called Gaylord in one issue.

I've had to shrink the image so it'll be 30KB anything over that it won't load the image

Huh, I got the gist of it.
  • Hard-Nut: "Good! A circus. I'll try for a job there."
  • Hard-Nut: "Do you want a handy man, sir?"
Ringmaster: "Yes I want... the cannon..."
  • Ringmaster: "Ladies and gentlemen! The human cannonball!"
  • Hard-Nut: "Oh he's..."
    Spectator: "Jumbo! Come back!"
  • !
  • Spectator: "Gosh! He's knocked out the elephant!"
Ringmaster: "You've saved all our lives! I'll double your pay"
The strip, or least that particular episode, isn't actually racist - the same plot could've been done with a white guy. The only thing inappropriate is his subtitle, "the Nigger". It would be offensive to use that name now. They even censored Peanut (the masthead guy) and Lord Snooty's pal Polly at one point, just because of how they drew black people.

That's how it goes.. Now for some more casual racism in the form of Desperate Dan from the 1943 Monster Comic

There was something similar in the 1981 Dandy Annual. In a Desperate Dan strip a man gets covered in tar and knocked on his head. He ends up thinking he is a black man so emigrates along with his family to wonga-bonga land.

What about the time that Dan discovered he had a relative who was.......a bear!

Even as a 6-year old reader, I knew something was ammiss there!

But who knows, maybe inter-species breeding will eventually become socially acceptable, the way society seems to be going..... :D :D :D :D :D

That's a very bear-ist attitude.

Congratulations to the editors on letting this one go through

I love Barrie Appleby's Cuddles & Dimples stuff - it's like they live in Carry On world, all big bouncy bits and vicars in a state of undress everywhere, not to mention the casual sadism between the cat and parrot:

I would mention the infamous Desperate Dan strips involving the 2 Chinese slaves from his 1977 annual, but as the original strip was from the 50s/60s, it's most likely of it's time!

The poem at the top of one strip, where he gets covered in soot and impersonates a Minstrel...

"Jumping crackers and Jumping Dan,
What a funny Chinese larkee!
As he goes BANG across the town...
...he turns into a Wild West (You can probably guess)!"

TwoHeadedBoy - thanks for posting the C & D pet mouse story. I remembered a girl getting her dress sucked off by a vacuum cleaner but could never find that issue when I looked for it.

My favourite C & D strip was this one, with Mumsie leaning over the cot. I think Barrie Appleby was asked to tone it down after this because she was flat as a pancake by the following issue.

Edit: Okay - I'm trying to add the image but I don't know how!

In my favourite `fun` comic- `Sparky` two "L.Cars" episodes were really insensitive. Issue 500s (Aug 1974) "Illigal Immigrants" and a 1976 sequal titled "Curry on L.Cars" Said strip also ran a very mysoginistic episode that made Policewomen only fit to do filing because they were scared of spiders!!
A Face unclouded by thought.
