annuals
Re: annuals
£2.50? Hmmm!
Reading comics since 1970. My Current Regulars are: 2000 AD (1977-), Judge Dredd Megazine (1990-), Spaceship Away (2003-), Commando (2013-), Monster Fun (2022-), Deadpool and Wolverine (2023-), Quantum (2023-).
Re: annuals
They marked them down? Wasn't expecting that to happen until after Christmas.

Re: annuals
Got best of topper and best of Beezer for £ 2.50 each , my sainburys also had some annuals knocked down to a quid , most were good for door stops only
Re: annuals
I guess you mean some of the licensed titles? I only bother with the mainly comic strip ones - Beano, Dandy, and Simpsons.
Re: annuals
No one has mentioned that all WHSmith annuals are reduced to £5 including the Coloured BROONS and it looks like they are selling them even cheaper online.Where do you people shop?

Re: annuals
We the people shop in Sainsburys apparently. Perhaps Smiths hasn't been mentioned because other places are selling them cheaper. Annuals are now £3 each in Sainsburys, and as has been mentioned, the 'Best of' books are now down to £2.50. Why should we buy them from Smiths at a fiver each?abacus wrote:No one has mentioned that all WHSmith annuals are reduced to £5 including the Coloured BROONS and it looks like they are selling them even cheaper online.Where do you people shop?

Re: annuals
I wonder how low the prices can go with the shops and publishers still making a profit?
Re: annuals
With less than three weeks to go before Christmas I imagine they are focused more on getting their outlay back rather than on any profits. If people are not prepared to pay Sainsbury's the £3 and/or the £2.50 they are apparently asking, then they either can't afford even those rock-bottom prices or they don't really want the books.abacus wrote:I wonder how low the prices can go with the shops and publishers still making a profit?

Re: annuals
Update: I've just been to Sainsbury and the Dandy Annual is now only a pound! Grab 'em while you can, folks. Even the most careful spender can't argue with that price.Phoenix wrote:With less than three weeks to go before Christmas I imagine they are focused more on getting their outlay back rather than on any profits. Re: annuals
They must have a warehouse full of them. Desperation is the name of the game. At this rate, within ten days they'll be offering money to every customer, even those that only go in for corned beef, bread and a few cans of soup, to take the annuals off their hands.Lew Stringer wrote:I've just been to Sainsbury and the Dandy Annual is now only a pound!

Re: annuals
I think it's down to a price war between the retailers. A few weeks ago Smiths had them at 'buy one, get one free', effectively making them £4 each, so Sainsburys dropped them to £3, now Asda and Smiths have retaliated so Sainsburys have dropped them to a £1. But, yes, they can't be making much profit per unit at that price.Phoenix wrote:They must have a warehouse full of them. Desperation is the name of the game. The books are definitely shifting though, in my branch anyway. They've replenished the shelves since I was in a few days ago.

Re: annuals
Presumably the policy is Pay no attention to the financial loss, empty the warehouse.
Re: annuals
It doesn't bode well though. If the annuals are being sold at such cheap prices, then that means that profits will be low to non-existent. And non-profitable titles probably won't be back next year (it just wouldn't be good business sense). There's such a thing as too much of a good thing.

Re: annuals
Presumably Sainsburys bought them on 'firm sale' (ie: non-returnable) rather than s.o.r. (sale or return) so it's they who stand to lose, not DC Thomson. As someone just mentioned to me, the danger is it creates an expectation for next year when no one will be willing to pay more than a pound for an annual.Digifiend wrote:It doesn't bode well though. However, we've done the artwork for the 2016 dated Dandy and Beano annuals and they go to press very soon so at least you can be sure they'll be around next year.
