Loved the Glup drink free with Cor Comic No.1, it was different, also the voucher for a free Cadbusys Moose bar with Knockout no.2 was pretty good. I always thought the IPC gifts were better the DCT ones especially the plastic cars and planes in the likes of Victor were like something out of a cracker and didn't float my boat.

Mention of the 'Gulp' free gift brings back happy memories of a similar gift from four years earlier that I certainly considered generous at the time. This was the 'Creamola Foam' drink crystals that were given away for three consecutive weeks in Buster in May 1966. Lemon, Raspberry and Orange heaven in a time before e numbers and any mention of hyperactivity in children. Can it really be fifty years ago this very week that I was enjoying all that frothy raspberry goodness! My, how time flies!

Ingredients were, indeed:

Sugar.
Citric acid.
Sodium bicarbonate.
Tartaric acid.
Flavouring.
Saccharin, sweetener.
Gum acacia, stabiliser.
Extract of quillaia (foaming agent).

According to WebMd, potential side effects of quillaia are:

"stomach and intestinal disturbances, and kidney and liver damage. Quillaia also contains chemicals called oxalates that can lower bloodcalcium levels and cause kidney stones. Quillaia use can also cause diarrhea, stomach pain, serious breathing problems, convulsions, coma, red blood cell destruction, and kidney failure. Quillaia can also irritate and damage the lining of the mouth, throat, and digestive tract."


I suppose "frothy raspberry goodness" is another way of putting it!

I can't remember much about the taste, 50 years on, but I don't think I had the following week's other flavour so perhaps it didn't leave a good impression.

I did like the lemonade powder they used to sell in Woolworths around that time though.

The lemonade powder I remember was actually in the form of tiny crystals. We consumed it by repeatedly licking the end of an index finger, dipping it into the paper bag and licking off the adhered crystals. Is this the same kind of powder that you are referring to, Lew?

The lemonade powder I remember was actually in the form of tiny crystals. We consumed it by repeatedly licking the end of an index finger, dipping it into the paper bag and licking off the adhered crystals. Is this the same kind of powder that you are referring to, Lew?

I've just looked at the back of the Cor! gift of Gulp and the ingredients are Citric acid, sugar, flavouring and colouring.

If I remember correctly, Cresta had Tartrazine in it which some people had an allergy to. I just remember that it was "Frothy Man"!

Yes, that's it. That was an alternative way of digesting it (and would give you a more condensed and tastier 'hit' doing so) but they were intended to be dissolved in water like those free crystals mentioned earlier. I enjoyed either method.
