Jack Prout / Black Bob

Post by Hawkeye »

Just bought an original Black Bob sketch and I'd love to know which Dandy it appeared in. I'm told by the seller that it's some time in 1949.

Anyone help please?

The large space at top right suggests a title might have gone there. You see that in comics like Famous Funnies where they reprint newspaper strips and remove the title mastheads.

Your excellent illustration appeared in a Black Bob Annual. Unsure of the date but the British guide lists the back cover illo as Bob with 3 other dogs. If that's right it's 1959. Your illustration is part of the text story, Brave Bob on the Danger Trail. See page 50 of the annual.
Did the annuals reprint stories from the weekly?

Thanks for that, and that's something I've sometimes wondered regarding weekly stories going into the annual.

The Dandy Monster Index has a section on Block Bob and the annuals.

It says that all the picture stories in the comic were reprints from the Weekly News. It also lists the contents of each annual and says when the picture stories were later reprinted in the comics (not the other way round). Its not explicit in the Dandy Monster Index so i'm not sure if this means that all the picture stories in the Black Bob annuals were printed in the Weekly News originally.

It doesnt say whether or not the text story is one from an earlier comic.
