Original Red Dwarf Smegazine Art

Post by Into The Abyss »

As a bit of a memorabilia Magpie, I love to obtain things that catch my eye. Here's some of my Red Dwarf Smegazine pages owned. The two pages are mixed media, They have been penned, coloured, with a plastic cell overlayed with speech-bubble dialog. Both are from 1992 and are signed by the famous Eagle , Beano, Victor, 2000AD, Commando artist, Alan Burrows.

Red Dwarf Smegazine, page #7 is from 1992 and is signed twice by the artist. Once underneath the speech cell in the bottom right-hand corner and reads, Alan Burrows,93. And again to the right-hand side of Rimmer's hand.

Hey, no problem friend. Nice to give these pages an airing after being stored away. Love too that you own some Eagle art by Alan Burrows. Man's got so much talent, it's unreal. Anyway, to own one of his pages to me is thrilling. Well done! I'm green with envy. ;)

PS. Here's the 1990 Dan Dare Exhibition concept art that I own. Wish I knew the artist. Well executed though (see below).

Recently dug out another Red Dwarf artwork. This time not as elaborate and colourful the other two, but a B&W page from Red Dwarf Smegazine issue #4 from June 1992. Ki

Here's the original page that I own and the colourised version that featured in the Smegazine. I find a lot of detail was lost once the colour was added. In my opinion it looks better uncoloured. 8)

Sadly due to colourisation process, likely using a cell overlay, the published page has the blotting paper effect in which the colour bleeds out giving the image a blurry feel resulting in loss of detail.

Cheers Richard S. Yeah, I was fortuate to source them when I did. Ironically days earlier missed out on another page for sale and was totally gutted only to stumble across three at once, and by the late Ron Smith of 2000AD fame too,. 😃

Ron Smith on Red Dwarf! I never knew.

I love Ron’s work and he’s right up there with Brian Bolland and Carlos Ezquerra in my 2000AD Hall of Fame, yet never seems to get the same recognition.

Yeah, I agree. Anyone who can draw strips for the 2000AD & Eagle comics then do characters for the Topper & Dandy deserves recognition. Not many artists are that versatile.

The Red Dwarf Smegazine throughout its 2 volune run had various artists, and like you were more familiar with Ron Smith's work on 2000AD among other classic titles he did i.e Warlord, Hotspur etc.... To be honest was pleasantly surprised to see pages done by him. Not sure if he only did that one issue though? But I think out of all the artists featured on the Smegazine his were some of the best drawn.
