My Favourite Comic Artists

Post by Kev-1961 »

My earliest memories of comics are thanks to the late Mike Noble,I am a bit young for Fireball-XL5,but I looked forward to the weekly exploits of Zero-X,and the others that followed-except for Follyfoot,(prefered the tv series),and Worzel Gummidge,(again prefered the tv series),-he is also secondary to Ron Turner.
Treasure, with Tales From Princess Marigold Land,by Giorgio Bellavitis.
The Beano, with Billy The Cat-later with Katie.drawn by David Sutherland and Sandy Calder, possibly based on Spiderman and possibly the inspiration for Judge Dredd.
Into the 1970`s with Buster and Cor-later Buster and Jet,and Pete`s Pocket Army-Franco Solano Lopez,(he was joined after a while by his cousin Julie,-who,as a pre-teenage schoolgirl, was well developed!lol!),later it got to cartoony when they changed the artist, and Sammy Brewster`s Secret Ski Board Squad with Joe Colquhoun.
Look-In had the Bionic Woman and John M.Burns, there were others-but he was my favourite-I was a teenager by then-(Ahem!?)
TV Comic had Dr.Who with either John Cumming or Martin Ashbury.
2000AD,Judge Dredd-Brian Bolland and Ron Smith.
And Lastly Steve Kyte, same level of detail as Noble, but,in looks, more accurate to the early Anderson puppets.
I just wish that I could have kept more, but my parents`insisted`,but, thanks to the internet,I have managed to claw some back.

Hi Kev,
Most of these stories were reprinted in Greece too (via magazines as "Agori" & "Blek"), during the 70s.
I am a comic writer, willing to "investigate" as many of them as I can.
Hope we can share info here !
All the best,
Nikos Nikolaidis

I can't help with the name of the series, but the artist looks like Dudley Wynne.

Hi Nick,
This art kind of reminds me of what happened to the art featured in the 1990`s Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet comics by Mike Noble, somebody coloured in his b/w art for those comics,-which he stated at Special Assignment event that he was not happy with.

Concerning the Greek edition above, I am sure that the artist (Dydley Wynne) wouldn't like the coloured pics, too :o
If he was able to see that, of course.
:D

With brief reference to Look-In Magazine,I just wanted to say that I personally thought Nobles' work on the Space 1999 strip was his best;however Noble has publically stated that he was most proud of his work on the Worzel Gummidge strip.
