Topper Comics 1960s

Post by booksandcomics »

Hi All,

I am in the midst of sorting out comics for a friend who picked up a large box of comics from the 50s and 60s. Unfortuantely they are all over the place and I am trying to sort them all out into order, correct pages etc.

Can anyone advise on how many pages the Topper had in the 60s? I have collated issues from 1964 onwards all of which have 16 pages, however, I am concerned that I may have pages missing from the following issues;

* Issue 561 Nov 2nd 1963 (Fireworks Issues) - 12 pages
* Page 1 - Cover Page
* Page 2 - Beryl the Peril
* Page 3 - "It's all Yours" (Readers letters)
* Page 4 - Figaro
* Page 5 - Nature Pared, King Gussie and Julius Cheeser
* Page 6 and 7 - Flip McCoy centre spread
* Page 8 Send for Kelly
* Page 9 Foxy
* Page 10 Toad-in-the-Hole
* Page 11 Nancy, The Bustem Boys on Bunkum Island
* Page 12 - Back Cover

* Issue 102 Jan 15th 1955 (12 Pages)

* Issue 103 Jan 22nd 1955 (12 Pages)

Any Topper experts out there who can help?

Cheers,

Adam

According to Ray Moore's excellent book "Topper Tales", The Topper had 12 pages for the first decade or so (Nos. 1 to 573) then went to 16 pages until the end of its' large format run (No. 1439, 30/8/1980)

Thanks for the tip! Looks like it is a complete comic after all! :-)

Great read to, I've not read many of the large Topper issues.

How long did "Toad In The Hole" run?

I think "Toad" ran from about 1962 to 1965, drawn by Mike Barratt! It was very probable, that it stimulated DC Thomson writer, Peter Clark for a story in Sparky comic's "I. Spy" series in 1971, in where the villains of that story the "Skywaymen" were ancestors of 17th Century villagers who still existed in 17th Century mode in the own village, set up high in the sky- inside a cloud!!
A Face unclouded by thought.

Toad in the Hole ran in Topper in nos 529(23/3/63) - 638(24/4/65). It also appeared in the Topper books 1965 and 1966 and was reprinted in the boys paper Victor from issue no 620(6/1/73)

Thanks. When we lived in Broughty Ferry, my friend Gayle got Topper, and "Toad" was my favourite at that time. Later, it was "Send For Kelly".

Was it Mike Barratt who drew that strip in Peoples' Friend with the characters that vaguely resembled Donald and Goofy?
