Victor in the paper.

Post by stevezodiac »

Every year my local paper The Southwark News asks readers to nominate someone they think should receive a blue plaque. This week the suggestion is Basher Bates and they used a Victor cover to illustrate the article. I haven't read it yet so don't know who Basher Bates was.

This was published in issue 157 and here is a synopsis of the story.

How Cpl Sidney 'Basher' Bates, Norfolk Regt, charged elements of the 10th SS Panzer Div. On 6 Aug 1944. Despite being heavily wounded, Basher continued to attack and drove off the Germans attempting to outflank the British 3rd Division at Sourdeval. For this, Basher was posthumously awarded the VC.

I can't identify the artist of the initial publication but when it was republished in 712 and 1259, the art was done by Felix Carrion.
I started to say something sensible but my parents took over my brain!
