THE PRISONER 1967 TV SHOW
Re: THE PRISONER 1967 TV SHOW
Sorry I should've explained what a "rah" is earlier; Jim gave a spot on description.
I'd add that many have Mummy and Daddy's millions backing them, so they don't have to do any work and can pay chancellors if they fail exams, and ridicule those in distress. Also have no respect of consideration of joe public and other people. From my experiences of being around Oxford Road Manchester this could include hogging pavements whilst ridiculing those in a hurry they prevent to get past and getting on buses then pressing bell to get off at next stop.
The adult comic "Brain Damage" summed them up quite well in an early edition: In their "Bloody Stoodents" , one student has a "nightmare" of the dystopian future with student loans: in one frame it depicts that those who could afford to go and buy their way in take over: one girl with massive sweating front teeth comments "everyone has lotsamanny and there's no b*****ds from Northern Comprehensives to be seen".
Exactly how many of them were: I came from a Comprehensive but in a Southern tourist county, had little money and most of that I had was earned from working for 5 years in various jobs and membership of the Young Conservatives was high and Labour group next to none- and this in a "bog standard" ex-poly in Sunderland.

London Live is currently repeating Man in a Suitcase. In last night's episode a girl says to McGill 'be seeing you". The next shot shows McGill in a helicopter over Portmerion. I missed the scene but got the information from Imdb. It's repeated on Saturday so I've set my box to record it.
Incidentally in an episode of either Department S or Jason King, Jason is at a discotheque and says to a girl "groovy, baby" I think its more likely Department S as I saw it last year/early this year and Jason King hasn't been repeated lately, although it is coming to Rewind TV soon.

The Man From Uncle is one of my fave shows ever.stevezodiac wrote: ↑23 Sep 2024, 20:08I spent Thursday nights in the kitchen watching the black and white portable TV. Then it was Top of the Pops around 7.30 followed by The Man From UNCLE at 8pm, news at 8.50pm and then The Frost Report.
I don't think they repeated it much,I only recall seeing the movies (8 made from tv episodes, some with extra material) in the seventies and never saw the actual series until BBC2 did a re-run from series 2-4 in the early nineties.
Have it all on DVD now although that was frustrating as first they released 5 Uncle movies, then a region 1 all 8 films, then series 1 ...
I bought all and eventually got the region 1 all series collection.
For me,throughout the seventies, the Man From Uncle was paperbacks, annuals, comic strips (all of these bought from jumble sales as were old!)
and movies.
Was so weird seeing an actual episode for the first time in the 90s.

Completely agree, one of the best actors ever and was offered the James Bond role but turned it down.Into The Abyss wrote: ↑25 Sep 2024, 12:16Love the Prisoner series set in Port Merion, Gwynedd. It was a unique quirky series that oozed the 1960s. I know fans still attend conventions and you can even stay there. The golf carts as vehicles and the large chessboard iconic, especially the balloon that captured those attempting to escape frightened the hell out of me as a child.
Big fan of Patrick McGoohan as an actor too. He was excellent in the classic ITC Danger Man series. He was particularly menacing in Hell Drivers & Alcatraz films.

Have all 4 of the main Irwin Allen shows on DVD,have The Time Tunnel Region 1 version as the region 2 version is rubbish.DavidKW wrote: ↑02 Oct 2024, 15:01I never saw most of the Irwin Allen shows on C4 originally. This was often because I had something else going on when they were being shown; the fact that my parents would not allow me to have my own TV in my room until I was 18 (whilst my peers got theirs from ages of , in 1988. Or later on, when at Uni 1992-95 I was often too busy studying and/or being distracted by the noises of evil rich rah students in my residences.
I got to see more of IA stuff and watch it properly when Land OF The Giants, then Lost In Space got shown on the Horror channel a few years back. Do remember seeing Voyage occasionally when repeated on TVS/ITV during school holidays, shown as regional morning schedule fillers. Have got both series of Giants of DVD and first more serious series of Voyage for a bargain.
Network released it in production order and cut off all the cliffhangers!!!

Yes he loved the location and I personally have wanted to go there for ages. It's first used in ep 1 "View from a Villa".DavidKW wrote: ↑02 Oct 2024, 15:09Yeah I remember those red triangle films. Many satire sketch shows poked fun of the triangle.
I love Hell Drivers and agree McGoohan is chillingly menacing and depraved in the film. Anytime - like when waiting for a bus - I start thinking of a list of worst and vilest villains in British films of the 50s, 60s and 70s, red form Hell Drivers always instantly comes to mind (alongside vile Judd (Freddie Fletcher) from "Kes").
So 4 times Portmerion was featured in Danger Man - PM must have loved the place a lot, can see why, has great visual effect. Do remember McGoohan once saying in first time it was used in series, he drove a bronzer Aston Martin up a hill there. I think a young Wendy Craig was a guest star in this episode.
A young Wendy Craig is in eps 23 "The Gallows Tree".

Yes we all have met many "rahs" in our time.
I'm not a fan.

Man In a Suitcase....OMG I loved that show when I first saw it repeated in the 90s and used to tape every episode on VHS cassesttes.stevezodiac wrote: ↑02 Oct 2024, 16:30London Live is currently repeating Man in a Suitcase. Re: THE PRISONER 1967 TV SHOW
Man From UNCLE is also my favourite tv show and, sadly, I still carry a home made UNCLE ID card with me every day. In the 60s I loved spy shows like UNCLE, Get Smart, Amos Burke Secret Agent, I Spy as well as It Takes a Thief and T.H.E. Cat.
Re: THE PRISONER 1967 TV SHOW
Love Get Smart,Burkes' Law and I Spy also but haven't seen or heard of "It Takes a thief" or "T.H.E. Cat.stevezodiac wrote: ↑04 Oct 2024, 15:18Man From UNCLE is also my favourite tv show and, sadly, I still carry a home made UNCLE ID card with me every day. I love the fact that you have a homemade Uncle ID card, that is just excellent and I am going to try to get my more creative other half to make me one now !!!
BRILLIANT !!!!
BTW: My fave series of MFU is series 2 but series 1 very close. Also love the Solo pilot film.
I enjoy series 3,even though it's a bit camp and think series 4 is excellent but just that neither of these match the sheer quality of the first two seasons/series.
Feel exactly the same about Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea,although in that case my fave series is the first one.
It's funny how both of these shows follow a similar pattern;first series black and white, second series massively popular, third series camp and fourth a return to seriousness from series 1.
Odd that.

Re: THE PRISONER 1967 TV SHOW
I watched Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea when it was first broadcast here but not a great fan, it was the lack of female cast members. Land of the Giants on the other hand had the beautiful Deanna Lund. My sister hated her because she always got the attention of the hero Steve Burton. I think there was a rule in UNCLE that an attractive female member of the public would get involved in each episode's story
Re: THE PRISONER 1967 TV SHOW
Very interesting point and while I love Voyage I noticed that after series 2 it basically becomes an all male thing which is another reason that I prefer the first two series.stevezodiac wrote: ↑05 Oct 2024, 19:48I watched Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea when it was first broadcast here but not a great fan, it was the lack of female cast members. Deanna Lund was indeed beautiful but I also had an eye for Heather Young. Two very attractive young ladies.
And yes,I think the writers of Man From Uncle were told to stick to a basic story guideline each time as there was normally a beautiful girl that was innocently involved in almost every caper.
