Buster Special 2009
Hiya,
So you may or may not know (depending on how much Christmas has overtaken your mind) that the Buster special is out on Wednesday.
Last month bustercomic.co.uk was granted a special advanced copy of the comic, and you can now read our review at www.bustercomic.co.uk/review.html
All in all, looks quite promising!
Matt

Thanks for the reminder. I intend to buy this one, will do so next time I'm in Hull city centre.

Re: Buster Special 2009
Looking forward to it on Wednesday, but I think they've missed an opportunity to appeal to a wider readership by not including the 1980s as well.

Heck, it's before my time (I was born in the 80s!) but that's not going to stop me. It's of interest for the same reason the Beano-Dandy books and the comics The Guardian offered recently are. Getting to see stories you might have missed first time round. And several characters are familiar anyway, like Chalky, X-Ray Specs, and the title character, which all survived until the very last issue.

Yes, but you and the rest of us here aren't the typical reader that these specials are aimed at. They're pitched at a nostalgia market, but it's not one that has an interest in comics in general. A Seventies collection is mainly going to appeal to adults who read it back then. Let's hope there are enough 40 somethings interested enough to buy it. (If they can see it. My local Smiths still has a pile of the Misty special at the back of the shelves in the dark. It just didn't sell here at all.)Digifiend wrote:Heck, it's before my time (I was born in the 80s!) but that's not going to stop me. Re: Buster Special 2009
Same problem with Misty here, my local Smiths branches all have virtually the same amount they started with. Doesn't bode well for any future Egmont Classics specials.

I don't think a washed out yellow and green cover helped. And 40 plus women are a harder nostalgia market to attract than 40 plus blokes.Digifiend wrote:Same problem with Misty here, my local Smiths branches all have virtually the same amount they started with. (Ok it worked with Jackie, but only in a "can't believe we lived like that/ dressed like that" way, not for the stories. And Jackie was massively popular in its day. Misty much less so.)
I understand Roy of the Rovers did well, so perhaps they'll do another one of those?

Re: Buster Special 2009
Yeah, I think a girls comic requires something completely different in terms of marketing for nostalgia.
I believe Battle also did well, so let's hope something happens. Buster should be the big seller. Unfortunately, I'm not in the UK so won't be able to pick up one
Hopefully, I can persuade someone. It would be pretty poor not to get the first Leopard from Lime Street since...well...since I reprinted them in Starscape

Re: Buster Special 2009
Unlike the short run Misty comic the magazine Jackie ( it was never really a comic) was a pubescent mainstay for several generations of girls and the link with the Jackie CD boxsets of 70's music can't have hurt sales for the nostalgia volumes either.
Re: Buster Special 2009
I would have thought that in the dark was an appropriate positioning for the Misty. Smiths should be applauded for such an inspired decision. And to think we felt they had no imagination!!Lew Stringer wrote:My local Smiths still has a pile of the Misty special at the back of the shelves in the dark.

Re: Buster Special 2009
Something of a disappointment - I can't find it ANYWHERE!
Chelmsford Train Station, Liverpool Street Station & Holborn Circus all not stocking it yet (a search that made me late for work!)
Oxford Street claim they're hoping it'll be in tomorrow...not quite the grand launch you'd hope for.
Anyone else had any luck?

In my experience these specials always tend to appear the day after they're supposed to - so I assumed it wouldn't crop up till Thursday!
Re: Buster Special 2009
I couldn't find it either in the 'Smith's I bought the other 3 on the date they came out.
Re: Buster Special 2009
Got mine today on the way to work in Chorley. They only had about 3 copies and had to ask for it as it was hidden away.
Not had chance to look at it properly yet.. it's all black and white though, except for the cover obviously.
