Buck Ryan returns

Post by Lew Stringer »

Reprints of classic Buck Ryan strips have begun in the Daily Mirror today, but it's not all good news....

Was it really so wise to start from 1959 when the strip originally ended in 1962? Three years from now they'll either have to go back to an earlier point in the continuity, commission new strips, or replace it with something else. They should be planning for the long haul. Garth has managed to last four years despite doubling up (and can last that long again twice over). Buck can't do the same, I think they should have started from an earlier point.

The Garth stories have been reprinted out of sequence too, so it's possible they'll show an earlier Buck Ryan story when this one concludes. Or, if they do run them in sequence, perhaps they'll replace it with a different strip in 2018, if the Mirror is still running strips by then.

A lot of Buck Ryan stories were featured in later issues of Fleetway's Super Detective Library, taking over from their reprints of American Rip Kirby strips.

It's sad that even the Daily Mirror has reduced its investment in new strips to such an extent. Funnily enough I picked up some old copies from a local charity shop last week and one from May 1937 shows how seriously the Mirror used to take their picture strips by celebrating the arrival of EC Segar's Popeye (just in time for the Jeep to appear on the scene) with a feature boasting of all the regular comic characters readers could now find in their pages every day.

I'm a fan of the Buck Ryan strips and have many of the SDL versions, but those have been cut up a bit to fit the pocket library format. With the demise of ADCCC, there seems to be no outlet for their reprints of many old newspaper strips. Fortunately, I was a member and bought a lot of strips from them. So as well as Buck Ryan, they offered Tug Transom by Peter O'Donnell and the excellent Alfred Sindall, Jet Ace Logan, Paul Temple, Jane, Judy, 4D Jones, Garth - lots more.
