Daily Mirror has axed Mandy

Post by Digifiend »

Today's Daily Mirror has a photo from the archives in place of three of the comic strips. Mandy, the Buck Ryan reprint, and one of the Garth reprints are gone, while Andy Capp, Gag Vault, Perishers and the other Garth strip remain.

I'd heard they were going to make cutbacks again. A sad state of affairs from the days when the Mirror had more than a full page of comic strips plus cartoons.

I remember when we had the Mirror, Sun and Daily Sketch all with a gag cartoon section. Sadly only the Weekly News now has a section. But the latter seems to rely on just four or five cartoonists the best of whom being Wing who I was told submits over twenty cartoons a week of which about five are used. The Oldie magazine still has general gag cartoons.

Here are pages from late fifties/1960 Daily Sketch and Daily Mirror. The Mirror had more strips elsewhere in the paper including Jane.
