Is that the old design of Dennis the Menace I see on the cover of next weeks Beano. They also use it on the centre pages of this weeks. :D

Old design? So that's why Nigel quoted me with "And?" then. As one of Dennis's artists, he'd know that without even seeing the issue!

Nigel is also the artist for Dennis on the cover of next weeks issue.

NOTE: This is purely opinion - I'm not trying to create an argument - this is just my views on what is the new Beano and BeanoMAX covers. Please don't have a go a me or try and create an argument - I am simply a Beano fan who's scared of what's to happen in the comic's future.

--

Oh dear. New-look Beano next one and judging by the cover - it's not looking good...
On the plus side, it's back to the old Dennis design.

It looks like The Beano are trying to become "down wiv da kids" with the latest cover revamp which looks like it's been inspired by the awful Dandy Xtreme and Toxic Mag covers.

If they are anything like Toxic Mag inside - and judging by the appalling new cover containing things such as "Grossest EVER Shark Attack!" and the awful celebrity input of Usain Bolt performing his signature pose with a speech bubble added by the comic - I will stop buying The Beano.

The cover reeks of Toxic Mag - and that is not a good thing.

--

Of course, I know that the Toxic Magazine is Britain's top-selling kids' comic/magazine out there currently but that's acceptable - I can't stand Toxic Mag so I don't buy it. But The Beano famous for its classic style and comic humour becoming a replica of Toxic Mag? Well, they may get some new fans - but they'll certainly lose a lot of the old ones - including myself I say regretfully.

--

I know that we have to wait until next week to see how it all turns out - I could be completely wrong after all! But remember, Peter Gray thought they were merging The Beano and The BeanoMAX - well, in all honesty - I can see why he thought that because add "MAX" to the end of the title of the sneak-peek cover and hey, maybe I'd find that acceptable. But for the weekly classic Beano - which has been lasting for 74 years so far and coming up to the big 75th - is this really a wise move?

The latest cover revamp which reminisces the 1980s covers has an eye-catching title and looks neat and simple - but the upcoming cover revamp? Oh dear. Plus The BeanoMAX looks appalling - clearly a replica of the original-styled covers - why all of the filler and tackiness? Why not just use Nigel's fantastic cover picture and make it fill the entire cover - what happened to being proud of their characters and caring about the comic strips inside? "10 Greatest Ever Insults"? An insult is that they believe The Beano readers are going to like this new design.

--

I really do believe we're about to see the beginning of the end.

I see there's also a 'mouth-behind-the-eyes' motif next to the newly-inserted "the Menace" text in the title.

There seem to be two different versions of next week's cover - one at the bottom of the subscription advert, and one on the centre pages.

I wonder if this is related to the recent change in the introductory text of the Tree-House (changed back to the original text this week, strangely) about it becoming "MORE EPIC"?

Going by the cover of BeanoMAX, it looks as if the menace-face logo is for a new marketing campaign called "Project Menace", with a given URL of http://redandblackisback.com. Unfortunately it seems they weren't quite ready for that URL to be printed in the Beano (albeit in tiny type in the middle of an advertisement on page 23), because the website doesn't exist - although the domain name was registered by DC Thomson a month ago.

The new Beano cover is basically the new BeanoMAX cover, but with the 'MAX' bit deleted. Both remind me an awful lot of Dandy Xtreme.

DC Thomson is behaving as if there are only two versions of the Beano we can have - bland, old-timey insipidness reminiscent of the 1980s and designed to appeal to forty-year-olds much more than seven-year-olds, or bland, crass over-commercialism designed to appeal to newsagents much more than anyone. There must be a third way, surely? Something like, oh, I don't know, the Dandy?

What I'd like to know now is what's to become of the comic strips? Dennis the Menace and Gnasher is in there for sure as is Minnie the Minx but could this mean it's bye-bye to a few stories so it can be released with "EPIC" filler?

Well, Bananaman has gone from the Beano website's "Characters" toolbar so could we be seeing bye to that? Could this mean a decrease in reprints? Will the comic strips still be there - will they get reduced in pages - will it be Dandy Xtreme all over again?

If it is then we're going to have to wait for two more years before they realise they're not getting "down wiv da kidz" and decide, "Hey, let's announce another revamp!" and then finally we'll see what we all want to see - a good revamp, one exactly like The Dandy perhaps? Just something that's actually funny.

EPIC FILLER? More like EPIC FAILURE.

Coo, he has as well! For the last six months the website's had a long-running glitch where if you hovered over the character bar, one of the entries was Bananaman, but if you clicked on the link to get to the http://www.beano.com/characters page, the corresponding square was a broken link to the deleted Three Bears page - the result of a botched update when they wanted to add Bananaman but realised they were lumbered with an inflexible and non-future-proof layout. (Another symptom of this is the Dennis the Menace category being used as a dumping ground for anything not strictly related to any character, now they don't have a blog any more.)

But now, both links go to the Three Bears - which is still 404. Now there's an epic fail for you!

And yet this one works! http://www.beano.com/characters/bananaman
So the link is still there - The Three Bears is on both Characters toolbars yet they have no page and Bananaman is no where to be seen!

To be honest I doubt the comic strips will take a back seat to filler as they have Beano Max for that and having similar content in The Beano would make the former redundant.

I am curious on the content of next weeks issue though could it be just the old Dennis design returning and a new look cover with the rest of the content the same or more changes. Could the strips inside be longer aka the first dandy relaunch, could Barrie Appleby be returning to draw Roger the Dodger since it appears according to the covers that Nigel Parkinson has took over Dennis the Menace. I guess we'll just all have to wait until next week.

I can't say I'm bothered if Bananaman has been dropped from The Beano though as I prefer him appearing in The Dandy.

Why not wait until next week? I'm no wiser than you as to what'll be in it but it's a fair bet they'll keep the core characters Dennis, Minnie, Bash Street, and Roger, so they're not getting rid of comic strips.

As for the articles, one reader's "filler" is another reader's favourite I'm afraid.

Maybe they're planning to replace it with Beano's Got Talent? ;)

Back on the subject of the cover, when the Dandy changed its covers to that dreadful celebutrash last summer, most of the internal content was unaffected (to the extent that the radically different cover design clashed quite messily with the original style guide in some places). Complete cover overhauls don't necessarily imply Xtreme-itis.

And let's not forget the best thing about that Dandy cover look, which is that it reverted back to a more conventional design after only a few weeks and was quietly dropped six months later.

I didn't know that at the time, as for some reason my shop had no Beanos and I've only just seen it on the website just now. However, Nigel has never stopped drawing him for MAX, which I'd assumed he'd have drawn.

That's true and that's exactly what I'm planning to do but there's no harm in guessing what next week will hold for us Beano fans. I don't think they'd remove BSK and Roger but I hope with Dennis being drawn by Nigel Parkinson that Roger will move out of its 80s reprints, we can say goodbye to the Dodge Diary and say hello to new Roger stories by Barrie Appleby.

That's sadly very true, I spoke to Mike Stirling last year actually about the weekly and what he's going to add. One thing he said was that feedback from the target audience reveals that they prefer filler to comic strips - one person even requesting for the comic strips to be removed from the comic as they only read the filler on an old Beano.com blog post!

And now it looks like every comic-loving Beano fan's worst nightmare is about to come true. :(

I wouldn't be surprised if Bananaman (assuming his removal from the website character bar wasn't in error), Number 13 and The Germs are all going (the Dandy superhero was only there in the first place to justify his merchandise on the Beano Shop website). However, replacing them with feature material (note that I don't call it filler) is a mistake, since as Gilly said, that does duplicate BeanoMAX thereby making it's continued existence pointless. MAX's only other big selling point that doesn't also apply to the weekly, is the inclusion of Wallace and Gromit, which could easily be converted into a one or two pager weekly strip (the one in the current issue of MAX is eight pages). The longer pagination was originally a strong selling point too (as it was for the 2004 Dandy), but the Beano has added more pages since then, narrowing the gap.

I can't see reprints being removed completely, as why start the reprints of Singled Out, under a new name, only to stop them after only two appearances?

One strip that's definitely finished though is Wenlock and Mandeville, since that was promotional material for the Olympics, which are now underway.

Where was the second?

All I have to go on are the Beano and BeanoMAX covers, but they look almost identical. That can't be a good sign.

This is looking oh so like another Dandy Xtreme moment.
