The Beano 75 years issue whats inside...its guessing time..

Discuss or comment on anything relating to D.C.Thomson's second longest running comic. The home of Dennis the Menace. Has been running since 1938.

I'll go to Smiths at Lewisham tomorrow as I also need to get some shoes and something from Argos. I also noticed The Works were selling last year's Broons Summer Special on ebay yesterday so I'll have a look in there as well. Its hard to do anything in this weather. We had a spectacular thunderstorm last night - anyone else?

WH Smiths in Hanley had both specials this afternoon - I particularly liked the cover to the Beano one!

The heavens opened here as well last night Steve. An earlier, more credulous age would've probably been convinced it was some kind of omen presaging the birth of kings! :)

That very same Manchester Arndale WH Smith had both on the shelves today...

WH Smith Nuneaton proved next to useless.

Me: Excuse me, there's a bookazine coming out celebrating The Beano comic's 75 years. Do you have it?

Assistant: We've got this. (Points to weekly, oblivious to the fact I have one of those in my hands ready to buy.)

Me: No, that's the weekly Beano. It's a one-off Beano special I'm looking for.

Assistant: (Picks up weekly). Is it about David Beckham? (Points to picture of David Beckham on the cover.)

Me: No, it's for the Beano's 75th anniversary. It's a bookazine format.

Assistant: I think this one's about David Beckham. (Points to Beckham again.)

Me: No that's just the regular weekly. I'm buying that but I'm looking for a special about The Beano's 75 years. In this bookazine format. (I point to last year's summer special, which they still have.)

Assistant: No... We've got this one. (She points to the weekly on the shelf again.) That's all we're having. Was it something specifically about David Beckham you were looking for?

Me: No. Thanks anyway. (Gives up.)

I blame the heat.

I got the Beano weekly and the two specials at Lewisham. Didn't bother with the Dennis Megazine as it looked awful. When I got home I made the mistake of flicking through the Dandy Summer Special from the back and seeing all that modern art which I can't stand. Jamie Smart will never appeal to me I'm afraid - I'm lucky to have grown up enjoying the greats.

Lew, I thought you didn't care much for football - so how come you're such a big David Beckham fan :)

Ha! Yes, it was a bizarre conversation. Perhaps I fit the WH Smith profile of Beckham fan although I never thought I looked much like a teenage girl myself.

Well, my WHSmith had both specials in a stand above the newspapers... but oddly, not also with the weekly comic and Dennis Megazine, which were in their usual place with the other comics. The till receipt called the Megazine BEANOMAX, just as I suspected it would. SID was right, their computers didn't know about the changeover.

Gotta say, - I like the free gift. The little stand up Beano figures (Turbo Battlerz) remind me of the cardboard footballers given away in Victor or something about 50 years ago. Except the heads won't fold and break off these. :D

I agree! I have mine stood proudly on my shelf behind me. I love the idea of these, I hope we get a few series of these - I'd love to have one of almost every Beano character, I'd have them all up on the shelf!

The Megazine's website is up, but the registration seems to be not working.

The arches on the Beano cover is from The Muppets...so nice nod..

Mostly liked the issue But I always think of the artists that have lost there jobs..so can't help being sad for them..
I like the foam party ending...also Beanotown map..1974 Beano annual by Robert Nixon comes to my mind..

I hate the toilet humour of Gnasher (suggestion) pooing on a celeb...yuck! and photos of celeb with snot..being sick..etc..I hate it hate it hate it..The Beano xtreme...
hopefully this will be dropped quickly..farting is not so bad compared to sick and poo..

I managed to get the Dandy and Beano specials straight away in Stafford WH Smith. However, I had trouble finding a copy of the Beanos 75th Birthday weekly issue.

I managed to find it and I have to admit that I was left feeling disappointed with the issue. Maybe its just me being nostalgic, but, I was expecting a bit more balloon / birthday cake artwork on it, more appearnces of Beano characters rather than the overload of celebs / a look back of Beano over the years? Didn't like the whole centre spread given over to the Smurfs either.

I'm not really sure what I was expecting from the 75th birthday weekly issue, but it certainly wasn't this. Am I being a bit old fashioned? Although I mostly read Dandy, I really was expecting a very big issue cover, something like the Millennium issue or issue 3000, a cover that really stood out and instantly memorable.

What are your thoughts?
