The Beano 75 years issue whats inside...its guessing time..

Discuss or comment on anything relating to D.C.Thomson's second longest running comic. The home of Dennis the Menace. Has been running since 1938.

The Beano 75 years issue whats inside...its guessing time..

Post by Peter Gray »

I just thought today I wonder if The Beano will do a top 75 characters of The Beano like the Dandy did in the last issue? Hope so...

Another idea is Doctor Who helping to celebrate The Beano's birthday liked Wallace and Gromit did before..

Whats your ideas...

For a start I can't believe how quickly this has come round, it only feels like 2 minutes since the final print issue of The Dandy.

I doubt it will have as many pages as The Dandy as that was doubly special being the 75th birthday and the final print issue but a return of old characters from throughout The Beano's history would be nice. Not just the original cast though as that was The 65th was all about.

OK, which old characters do you think the current cast should meet?

A variety from the entire history of The Beano could return either meeting the current cast of characters or return for one of strips similar to what The Dandy did.

As for who should return there are far too many to mention but maybe the likes of General Jumbo, Billy the Cat and The 3 Bears could come back for a one off. Also strips that appear in the Funsize Funnies like Lord Snooty and Little Plum could maybe have longer strips to celebrate the occasion.

Because I was pretty bored, I decided to type up the 75 stories I'd like to see in the 75th Anniversary Beano Special. I'm not too sure about a bunch of these but there aren't actually that many stories to work with as The Dandy had a far wider amount of stories. I've gone for a mixture of older and newer characters, if they were to make a special issue like this though, I imagine we may have to see a few reprints sadly.

STORIES FOR THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY BEANO (in no particular order):

Dennis the Menace and Gnasher
Minnie the Minx
The Bash Street Kids
Roger the Dodger
Billy Whizz
Ivy the Terrible
Bea
Ball Boy
Freddie Fear
The Numskulls
Fred's Bed
Meebo and Zuky
Big Time Charlie
Tricky Dicky
Gnasher and Gnipper
Ratz
Super School
Johnny Bean from Happy Bunny Green
Billy the Cat
The 3 Bears
Jonah
Tom, Dick and Sally
Crazy for Daisy
Calamity James
Little Plum
Baby-Face Finlayson
Lord Snooty
Big Eggo
Pansy Potter
Pup Parade
The Germs
General Jumbo
Pirates of the Caribeano
Les Pretend
Rasher
Ping the Elastic Man
The Nibblers
Number 13
Smudge
Rip Van Wink
Colin the Vet
Tim Traveller
Proctor Doolittle
Fatty Fudge
The McTickles
Danny's Nanny
Wee Ben Nevis
Punch and Jimmy
The Q Bikes
Gnasher's Tale
The Iron Fish
Red Rory of the Eagles
Colonel's Crackpot Circus
Jack Flash
Joe King
The Shipwrecked Circus
The Bird Boy
Uncle Windbag
Morgyn the Mighty
Jimmy's Magic Patch
Hooky's Magic Bowler Hat
Grandpa
Kat and Kanary
Bucktooth
Ding-Dong Belle
Maxy's Taxi
The Magic Lollipops
Deep Down Daddy Neptune
Hairy Dan
Simply Smiffy
Beano Manga
Lord Snooty the Third
Tin-Can Tommy
Derek the Sheep

Nothing wrong with reprints if they are classics like these..

Tom Thumb would also be on my list..

True but just not as many if they can help it. But yes, a few reprints would be nice - perhaps a reprint of Jonah?

This thread reminded me of the excellent Beano Top 100 series Ray Moore (Kashgar) ran for the Beano's 70th birthday five years ago - I've provided a link to the original thread, which I recommend all Beano fans should read:

http://www.comicsuk.co.uk/forum/viewtop ... f=7&t=2061

Using the idea of a 'Top 75' strips, I have taken the 75 highest ranking strips from the Ray's list (entirely his work) - up to and including Beano issue #3438 (June 2008), in descending order (an asterisk * denotes a strip that was current at that time). In the event of such a feature being included it would be interesting to see how many of these strips would be included:

1. Dennis the Menace*
2. Minnie the Minx*
3. The Bash Street Kids*
4. Roger the Dodger*
5. Lord Snooty
6. Biffo the Bear
7. Billy Whizz*
8. Little Plum
9. The Three Bears
10. Ball Boy*
11. Gnasher’s Tale/Gnasher & Gnipper* (not sure I'd have counted these two as the same strip myself, though I can understand why Ray did)
12. Ivy the Terrible*
13. Pup Parade
14. Grandpa
15. Baby Face Finlayson
16. Pansy Potter
17. Calamity James
18. Les Pretend
19. The Numskulls (would have ranked fifth including their Beezer appearances)
20. The Nibblers
21. Tom, Dick and Sally
22. Tom Thumb (highest ranking non-humour strip)
23. Beaginnings/Bea*
24. Crazy for Daisy
25. Big Eggo
26. Number 13
27. Smudge
28. Rip Van Wink
29. Tin-Can Tommy
30. General Jumbo
31. The Magic Lollipops
32. Hairy Dan
33. Jonah
34. Billy the Cat
35. Punch and Jimmy
36. Cocky Dick
37. Freddie Fear*
38. The Q Bikes
39. Kat and Kanary
40. Wild Boy of the Woods
40= The Iron Fish
42. Danny’s Nanny
43. Good King Coke
44. Rasher
45. Robbie Rebel
46. Red Rory of the Eagles
47. Jimmy and his Magic Patch
48. Maxy’s Taxi
49. Wee Peem
50. Roger the Dodger’s Dodge Clinic
51. Colonel’s Crackpot Circus
51= The McTickles
53. Go, Granny Go
54. Tim Traveller
55. Bash Street Kids Singled Out*
56. The Germs (I'm surprised they came so low considering the length of the strip's original run - they rank 30 places below Number 13, for instance)
57. Jack Flash
58. Wee Ben Nevis
59. Ping the Elastic Man
60. Jacky Daw with Maw and Paw
61. Have-a-go-Joe
61= Prince Whoopee
63. Joe King
64. Our Ned
65. Hooky’s Magic Bowler Hat
66. The Danger Man
67. The Shipwrecked Circus
68. Scrapper
69. Ding Dong Belle
70. Contrary Mary the Moke
71. Richard the Lion
72. The Prince on the Flying Horse
73. Doubting Thomas
73= Simply Smiffy
75. Wee Davie

The exact positions of these strips will have probably changed quite a bit in the intervening five years - looking at the number of appearances given in the thread Billy Whizz will have overtaken Biffo and Snooty by now, while Ratz and Fred's Bed (ranking 76th and 87th respectively) will have climbed significantly up the list, and I'd imagine Meebo and Zuky would probably now be in the top 75 as well - but it still provides a useful guide as to the strips you would expect to see in any 75 stories feature (I'm guessing all the top 20 would be included).

Unfortunately, it now looks like Fight My Monster might be in the birthday issue. It was in the last few issues of MAX and is moving to the weekly due to MAX's demise.

Unknown. Fight My Monster specifically said to "look out for the next episode coming soon to The Beano". W&G ends with "The End..."

W&G has finished with "The End" for some months, but I imagine that's the end of the licensing deal.

Re The Germs, its original run really wasn't that long, and Number 13's original run really was that much longer. It was quite a success.

BeanoMAX 79's issue preview is finally up on the official website, and confirms that Wallace and Gromit and Fight My Monster will both be in the weekly Beano every four weeks. Looking at the dates, their first appearance ought to be either the birthday issue or the one immediately before.

Would it be possible that Wallace and Gromit and Fight my Monster will appear different weeks in The Beano to rotate things a bit?

Yes, but since both are licensed strips, there must be certain contractual obligations. I am wondering which stories will be pushed out.
